János Hugo Bruno Hans Selye was an Austrian Endocrinologist that studied stress and its effects. In 1936 Selye wrote about a stress condition known as general adaptation syndrome or GAS for short. GAS is the body's response to a stressor that threatens the organism's well being and life. GAS happens in three stages alarm, resistance, and exhaustion.

My Method of Handling Stress

Throughout my 20 years of being alive I can say that i have never faced a stressor as serious as warranting a "fight or flight" response. However, I have been around people that have. One such instance took place during elementary school. It was the end of the day and I was one the school bus on the way home. When the bus stops at my stop I am not the only one to get off, there is one other girl that also gets off but goes a different way. However one day there was a mean dog walking up and down the street she goes down. Whenever she would try to go home the dog would run up to her and growl. She just ran away crying and screaming and sometimes standing there not knowing what to do. Until she saw me, at that point she ran towards me asking for help and what she should do. Since I wanted to go home I just grabbed a large stick walked her home and swung at the dog if it came close. Now I realized that her body went into flight mode and attempted to get away from the life threatening stressor.
