-written differently
-from online sources
-Summary: he personally immersed himself into an indigenous culture by travelling with them
got close to being a part of their culture
-he still was an observer
-he wasn't a tourist
-he was a visitor
-he wanted to understand how they functioned
-he was 'invited' in
-he put himself there
-for example, it's like when we go to visit colleges or try to immerse ourselves - visit vs. immersion
-If you stay longer than a couple weeks, you need to learn how to interact with the people there. You need to understand how their system works.
-with the invitation, you see the immersion by doing what the indigenous people did
-he didn't dictate what he wanted to do
-he did what they did during their daily routine
-he uses diction that indicates that -he went against his 'urge' to just watch and not take part
-he goes against his natural instinct of staying out of foreign acts- it's a natural human awkwardness - "had to stifle the urge to stay on the outside instead of joining in"
-barry lopez uses flowry and high vocabulary although he speaks of simple topics- he shows that he has a rich education

-key things u always want to include when doing an IOC on Lopez : language he uses, highly educated vocabulary but still an average american student, just speaking on what he did throughout his life . talk about his word choice and how that overall message fits into his life-- what is his purpose of sharing this with us?
Overall summary : he is in Alaska as he is walking with the indigenous people: true message would be that the actual invitation is referring to how he learned from *objectivity * - important because if you find something important you hold onto it forever. He observes and learns the ways and culture of the indigenous people and picks out the valuable knowledge he gains from the life lessons he has experiences. Giving off the idea that you need to observe and take everything in in that very moment and then evaluate and process later on. 1st experience evaluation will always be most important (first impression of the lives that the indigenous people live)

Language: topic matters are typically down to earth but uses words that elevate and demonstrates how educated he is.
Learns about indigenous people whom he interacts with and watches a bear eat a fish. He learns to pay attention to more details not necessarily just a bear eating a fish but what is around the bear, how the landscape is around the bear, what the bear looks like, what the fish looks like etc.
People need to soak up the experience and after words figure out the situation.
-Shows the two perspectives of the Native Americans vs. his viewpoint. To demonstrate the differences between how people typically just view a scene and not anything deeper then just the surface. (perspective changes based on how involved are you).
