I think the hero is Darl because, despite his questionable sanity and motifs, he attempts to put his mother at rest. Although burning down a whole barn was a little uncalled for, he may have decided to honor his mother, and preserve what dignity she had left, by attempting to cremate her. And a whole barn, but that's beside the point.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that the hero of the novel is Jewel. Jewel is the only one in the family who does any heroic actions, he's the only one that didn't have ulterior motives for going to Jefferson (except maybe Vardaman). There's also the fact that he is set apart from the others because he is not the child of Anse, which makes him the least crazy in my opinion. Despite this, he still sacrifices his horse for Anse, even though Anse is a jerk.

The hero of as "As I lay dying" is Cash. I say that it is Cash because as the older sibling he is the rock of the family so to speak. He is the one through the whole novel as displayed through his actions that cares for the family and for what happens to Addie. He protects the others in some parts through the harsh reality that they call their everyday life's.

I personally still do not see a hero in this novel. Though some may have some better qualities than others I would never claim anyone in this book as someone who is my hero. In the novel no problem was actually solved. Therefore because of this I do not believe that there could be a hero. I do not see courage, noble achievements or outstanding qualities in any of the characters. The only way we could call one of them a hero is if we lowered outstanding to terrible. In the end I do not believe a hero was in this novel.

From beginning to end one of the few constants in "As I Lay Dying" is the change is the speaker who is explain the events and sharing their thoughts. Faulkner took this approach to convey that perspective is integral in determining what is actually going on and understanding motives, and I think we also have to consider this while identifying the hero of the novel. For example, let's look at Darl. Darl, who has gone insane, tried to burn the barn that his mother's body was in. Intuitively this may lead us to the conclusion that he cannot be considered a hero, but that is simply not true. When you consider the stress that getting Addie in the ground was bringing to the family and the perspective of Cash that they were almost going against the will of God by not just letting her go, the audience can emphasize with Darl. Although to Anse he is the opposite of a hero, in other perspectives Darl may be.
From another perspective however, the argument could be made that Anse is the hero. If you adopt the perspective that Addie needs to be buried, Anse is the most dedicated to ensuring that. Although the argument could be constructed that he is motivated only by his own selfish nature, a change in perspective could make him the hero.
Being a hero is fully rooted in the perspective that you adopt, and that is what Faulkner hoped to teach us.

I feel as though the hero of the book was Cash because he made decisions for the best interest of everyone. He was the one who made the coffin for his mom so her final wishes could be made true. After, realizing his brother was troubled to help his family and his brother he was the one who got him sent away. Darl was dangerous to his family and risked them being in debt that they already couldn't afford so by him getting sent away it was better for the family. Throughout the entire novel Cash was faced with many difficulties but he kept pushing through them and leading his family. He was like the father they didn't have because all Anse cared about was himself.

The hero of the story was jewel. Although he, most definitely, was not the kindest character, jewel was the primary driving force behind solving the problem of the story, which was burying the body of Addie Burnen. He was the force which was primarily responsible for the coffin crossing the river, and he was the one who saved the coffin from the barn fire. He also falls into the category of a code hero due to his strong and silent stature and his willingness to sacrifice for the greater good without displaying his emotions.

The hero of the novel is Jewel. Most people see him a the bad one, the one who doesn't love his mother. Growing up Jewel has always cared for his mother. He is the one who wanted to be there for his mothers death, and the one who is took it the hardest.

I think the hero role is divided between Jewel and Cash. A hero needs to be emotionally and physically strong. Jewel is physically strong but doesn't have or show any emotions, while Cash tries to stay strong for the sake of everyone else. Cash holds the family together and Jewel gets the family moving.

Hero:a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Throughout the course of "As I Lay Dying" there are to characters that fit this definition in different ways. On one hand Cash is the Eldest son, every time we hear from his perspective he seems to be simple minded, yet every time another character tells us of his actions, they are always of sacrifice and nobility. On the other hand, Jewel is the middle Bundren, he is the odd one out of the bunch (for more reasons than one), and he seems to be rough around the edges. Yet, throughout the course of the novel, we see that Jewel is compassionate, humble, and doesn't let everyone know how much he really cares, about anything. Both of these characters, not only fit the definition of a hero, but along with the plot line, they seem to be some of the only one of the Bundrens that actually cared about their mother without having ulterior motives. Considering who their mother was, that is quite a heroic feat in itself.

I feeel the hero in he novel is darl because he is the only one with interchangeable view points and he trys to understand his family and he kind of tries to protect them but endds up being betrayed and sent to a mental insitution. He is socially awakward so the things tha t he says may detter the reader from from believing so, darl just lack communication skills.

I believe the hero of this story is Addie. She has almost this gilded image throughout the story and it makes the reader feel bad for her. However she is this character that is above everyone else and narrates the entire time. I find interesting that the novel is told from her perspective yet, when she speaks in the book she destroys the entire image that she has given the reader already. I believe she is the glue of the family and is the reason they all work together through the 10 days after her death to get her to the grave.

I feel as though the hero in as I lay dying is Cash. Cash demonstrates many selfless acts throughout the book, and are exemplified on their journey into town with Addie. The main point that really sticks out is his broken leg. He goes through this journey downplaying the fact his leg is broken. He remains mobile and vocal despite the painful process of cast construction and cast removal. In the book it talks about how even his skin is being ripped off and he is constantly trying to reassure everyone that he is okay, and that he will be okay. I see this as a noble act as he tries to keep the focus on Addie getting her into town for her burial, making him a very emotionally driven, strong mentally, and selfless person.
