The level of competition would further increase when Russia seemed destined to reached the moon after finishing first in every other category in space exploration.

Arms Race: The Arms was created when the USSR started developing it's own atomic bomb to counter the US atomic bomb. The arms race really became a competition after the creation of ICBM's at which point kit became about who had more.

Olympics: The olympics became a main source of competition as it gave a chance to prove which country was better athletically.
