He is also a doctor. Dr. Watson is really smart, but not quite as smart as Sherlock.

Holmes sends Watson on missions and has him do tasks that help Holmes solve the case. In the book currently, Holmes sent Watson to Baskervile Hall to investigate it and the people around it.

He thinks that Mr. Stapleton is suspicious. Dr. Watson looks out for Sir Henry and helps him at Baskerville Hall.

I think that when the telegram was delivered to them, Mrs. Barrymore lied about where John was. I think that really he was gone and not at the Hall at all. She said that he couldn't receive the message at the moment and this would explain why. I'm not sure was he would be doing, but I think that it's still a lead. They also both seem very suspicious and all the sudden want to randomly leave Baskerville Hall.

Before she knew who Watson really was she assumed that he was Sir Henry and started screaming at him. She was telling him to leave London and that she could not explain why, but just that he needed to leave. This is really suspicious because it means that she knew something which could be a lead. Even though she was mistaken for who she thought Watson was, she still apparently needed to tell that to Henry. Maybe she knows something about what's killing all of the Baskervilles or even about the hound.

We know this because he was being followed back in London. I think that another lead involved them bring followed and the taxi driver. The taxi driver made it a point to go to Sherlock and tell him that he knew nothing and was just simple doing what his customer asked which is a little suspicious. Currently, Watson and Sherlock need to figure out who was in that taxi telling the driver where to go which would extend this lead even more. Whoever it was could be responsible for the death of Charles' too if he cared so much to follow Sir Henry around.
