After the narrator teaches doodle to walk, run, and play, the Armstrong family develop hope in Doodles future. As the Doodle and the narrator grow older, they come across a bird, a scarlet ibis, dead on their front lawn. Doodle and the older brother agree to bury the bird for which he shouldn't be seen dead like that. The brothers take the bird while there is a storm approaching. Lightning strikes and hard rains develop. The narrator leaves his brother behind then waits for him to catch up.
