The part time HNC is delivered using a 'blended learning' approach, this means some classes are online and some classes are in campus. Currently we have 1 session per month on campus and the remaining weeks online.

Work placement.

You are required to be working within the sector or we can arrange a work placement.

The Childhood Practice team deliver a variety of courses across all of our campuses, offering qualifications that support students in developing their careers working with children and young people. These courses are designed to give a secure underpinning knowledge of working in the Childhood Sector however the placement element is vital in allowing our students to make links between the theory and practice giving them the necessary experience and skill development to enter confidently into the work force.
HNC students will organise and receive a visit from their allocated SVQ Assessor on the placement/ work setting. The student should discuss the visit with the placement supervisor/ line manager to ensure it occurs at an appropriate time to suit the setting.

During the visit the assessor will be looking for the students to demonstrate their abilities of working with children and staff in relation to communication, health and safety and reflecting on and developing their practice. The students will be briefed on this before the visit.

Additional needs

Our Learning Support team offers a voluntary and confidential service to help students who tell us about a disability or additional support need. We help students who disclose:

A specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD or ADD.
A visual or hearing impairment.
An autistic spectrum condition.
Mental ill-health.
A physical impairment.
Long-term illness.

The Learning Support team can help with applications for the Disabled Students Allowance for those who are coming onto a HNC or HND course.

Learning Support process

When you apply, include your disability or additional support need in your application.
Our Learning Support Team will contact you to arrange a meeting using your preferred communication method.
You will need to share any learning support evidence you have. A member of the team can advise on what evidence is needed. This could be letters, certificates, a dyslexia screening report or an educational psychologist report.
Your Learning Support Advisor will create a personal learning support plan with you. They will work with teaching teams to ensure that any recommended alternative assessment arrangements are appropriate.

When considering if you would like to apply for this course, please consider the PVG scheme (completed by Edinburgh College once place on the course is confirmed), more information is available here Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme - mygov.scot . This scheme helps to protect children and adults within our sector therefore we require a clear PVG to enable you to proceed with an application for this course. If you have any questions regarding this please get in contact to discuss.

You will receive an email with instructions on how and when to apply. You will only need to complete this if you need a placement, if you are working in the sector you will already have a PVG through your employer.
