I believe the American Dream is not the path to lasting happiness because 'The American Dream' is just an ideal goal one makes up in their minds, usually that goal is dreamy like and aimed very high. A lot of that that goal is the vision to be stable and successful financially so it brings no actual feelings of happiness in the long run.
~Valeriya

Abraham Shakespeare
He won $30 million in 2009. A short time later he was befriended by a man named DeeDee Moore who in 2012 killed Shakespeare. Shakespeare's brother Robert Brown said that after winning the lottery, Shakespeare kept saying "'I'd have been better off broke'" (Chan).

Sandra Hayes
She won $224 million at a Missouri lottery and split up the money with a dozen coworkers. She wrote the book, How Winning the Lottery Changed My Life, in which she talks about her close family and friends which tried to use her for the money she had won.

Richard Lustig
He won the lottery seven times now and when asked how the lottery changed his life he stated, "'I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor, and I like rich a whole lot better. We’ve lived in big, fancy houses. I drive a Jaguar. We’ve gone on cruises. I can’t complain'” (Chan). Lustig is one of the few exceptions of lottery winners. He claimed that hiring a financial planner and a financial accountant helped him manage the large sum of money.

Katy

Gatsby is trying to create happiness in his life by “Dispensing starlight to casual moths” he is trying to fill the void and emptiness that Daisy left, when she chose Tom instead of him by throwing huge and lavish parties at his big mansion. People of all time periods can learn a lot from Gatsby’s failures. Gatsby desperately wanted something he could never and would never have. He could never turn back time and be born into wealth or relive the past by having Daisy love him again. As humans we always desire everything that we can't have it’s simply in our nature. Gatsby was a very unhappy man because he has made happiness his goal. Daisy was wealth and wealth was happiness. We cannot think of happiness as a goal, we have to perceive it as a good outcome of a goal we've been striving for. At the end of the day, happiness is just a feeling that comes and goes and Gatsby didn't understand that. Maybe if he focused less on how to get that happiness and focused more on being and feeling happy he wouldn't have the outcome that he did.
 ~Valeriya
