My learning goal is to create a song that helps people feel relax, and I chose the topic Love for my song. I want my song to have a soft melody and simple lyrics that make people feel warm and peaceful. I chose this goal because I enjoy expressing emotions through music, and love is a beautiful feeling that many people can connect with. The song will not be too fast or loud. Instead, it will be calm and sweet, like a gentle moment shared between two people. I hope that when people listen to my song, they can feel relaxed and remember someone they love.

Since I don’t have much experience in writing music, I knew I would need support from the people around me. Luckily, I’m part of a music club at the University of Adelaide, where many members are passionate and knowledgeable about music. They not only guide me through the process of creating a song but also offer honest, constructive feedback to help me improve. After choosing the beat, I felt inspired to do rap melody in my song. To bring this idea to life, I invited a talented friend from the club - Cayden to collaborate with me, so we could create the kind of song I had in mind. At first, I only planned to make a short part of the song, about one to one and a half minutes long. But with Cayden’s support and encouragement, I felt more confident. Together, we decided to write a full song instead of just a short section.

My learning will be valuable to me because it helps me explore songwriting in a fun and creative way. By working on this love song, I can improve my skills in writing lyrics, finding melodies, and learning how to express feelings through music. My learning will be valuable to others because my song tells a simple but sweet story about love, and I hope it can make listeners feel happy and relaxed. It might even encourage some of my friends or people in the music club to try writing their own songs too.

My learning will be valuable to the community because music can bring people together. A positive and relaxing song can brighten someone’s day, and sharing this kind of music creates a friendly, supportive space - especially for young people who enjoy creativity and emotions through sound.

Before starting my music project, I’m carefully planning each step so that I have a clear direction before creating the final song. My goal is to make a chill, romantic love song that feels relaxing, emotional, and easy to listen to. To find inspiration, I’m planning to research how chill love songs are usually structured. I’ll focus on artists such as MCK, Obito, Tlinh, etc.. who are known for combining soft beats with meaningful but simple lyrics. By studying their tone, rhyme, and flow, I hope to understand how they create a calm atmosphere through both words and melody.

The first step in my plan is to search for a beat that matches the mood I want, something soft, warm, and romantic. I’ll listen to different options on YouTube using keywords like “chill love beat” or “romantic lofi beat.” (The beat I selected is shown in the section above.) Once I find one that feels right, I plan to listen to it several times and brainstorm ideas for lyrics that fit the rhythm and emotion of the beat. The story I want to tell is about a sweet couple who are both “simping” for each other, something cute, positive, and full of youthful love.

For the lyrics, I’m planning to write from both the boy’s and the girl’s perspectives, to make the song more balanced and relatable. I’ll use Notepad to write and edit because it’s simple and lets me make quick changes without losing ideas. I also plan to test each line by reading it out loud and matching syllables with the beat to make sure the flow feels natural.

Cayden and I collaborated to write the chorus together. According to the structure of our song, it starts with the first chorus, followed by Verse 1, Chorus 2, Verse 2, and finally the last chorus. To make the flow logical and balanced, Cayden performed the first two choruses and Verse 1, while I performed Verse 2 and the final chorus.

This chorus plays a key role in the song because it is repeated several times and sets the overall mood. It needed to be catchy, memorable, and emotionally expressive. The rhyme and rhythm in this section were carefully designed so the listener could instantly recognise and connect with it from the very first listen.

The lines “I got my love, she is my queen” and “call me on phone as a morning routine” show care and consistency in the relationship — love that feels natural and part of everyday life. “Got me like nicotine” uses a metaphor to describe how strong and addictive the emotion is, showing how deeply attached the singer feels.

The sounds “brmm brmm brmm” and “yum yum yum” were added to make the melody playful and rhythmic, rhyming smoothly with words like “dumb,” “club,” “gum,” and “Ms. Bloom.” The comparison with “Ms. Bloom” symbolises beauty and warmth, creating a gentle and affectionate tone for the song.

This screenshot shows the message from Cayden explaining the meaning behind the lyrics of his verse. His explanation helped me clearly understand the tone, emotion, and purpose of the male perspective in the song. I realised that his verse wasn’t just about describing love, it expressed admiration and loyalty in a playful, casual way.

By understanding how he connected everyday language with emotion, I learned how to make lyrics sound natural while still meaningful. His use of short phrases like “slay bae” and “treating you nice” showed me how to mix modern slang with romantic feelings to make the song more relatable to young listeners.

This evidence also shows how collaboration improved my learning. Through his feedback, I understood how my verse should balance his - softer, more emotional, and from the female perspective. It made me more confident to continue writing and find my own voice within the same theme.

When I began writing my verse, my goal was to create lyrics that sounded confident, fun, and reflected the female perspective. I started by applying what I had learned from my research, especially the idea of free writing is focusing on feelings and rhythm before worrying about rhyme or structure. I listened to the beat several times and wrote down whatever came to mind that matched the mood of the song.

This screenshot shows my first draft of Verse 2. The line “could u choose one outfit for me looking for the best in the party” was one of my early ideas. After reading and listening to it repeatedly with the beat, I realised it didn’t fit well. The line felt off-beat and didn’t match the melody or rhythm of the previous lines, making the flow uneven.

After receiving his feedback, I spent the weekend reviewing my lyrics carefully. I realised that the problem came from not paying enough attention to pronouns and perspectives when writing. I decided to fix it myself by replacing the words with “he” and “king,” which made the lyrics fit the female voice more clearly. This process taught me how even small details can affect the meaning and flow of a song. It also reminded me of how valuable peer feedback is, as it helps me notice things I might otherwise miss and improve the overall quality of my work.

I’ve decided to write the song in a rap melody style because it’s modern and helps the lyrics sound catchy while keeping the emotions real. I notice that many chill love songs use this style to make the message sound personal and expressive. It also works well with the kind of beat I’m choosing. Since I’ll be collaborating with Cayden, who has experience in rap, my plan is for him to write and perform the first verse from the male perspective, and I’ll write the second verse from the female side. This will make the song sound more like a conversation between two people.

Before starting my songwriting process, I research professional sources to understand how to write a song from both an emotional and structural perspective. One credible source I study is “Becoming a Songwriter – Full Course” by Andrea Stolpe, a professional songwriter and lecturer at Berklee College of Music, one of the world’s most respected music schools. I choose this video because it gives reliable, beginner friendly guidance based on real songwriting methods used by professionals.

Andrea explains that songwriting is storytelling, where each verse reveals a new part of the same truth. She also introduces “free writing”, a method that helps me express ideas naturally without worrying about rhyme or melody too early. From this, I learn how to turn emotions into raw material for lyrics and how to build structure around them. I also understand how each section - the verse, chorus, and bridge supports the emotional flow of a song.

This research helps me feel more prepared and confident to start writing my own song with direction, rather than guessing where to begin.

Another source I researched before writing is “This Simple Songwriting Formula Will Make You Write Better Songs in 20 Minutes” by Ethan Davis, a verified songwriter and producer with a strong background in pop and R&B music. I chose this source because it explains the technical side of songwriting in a clear and simple way, which is helpful for beginners like me.

Ethan introduces a “story arc” formula where a song moves from setup → emotion → release. He explains that every good song should take the listener on a small emotional journey. He also talks about finding a balance between repetition and change: repeating lines to make them memorable but adding small variations to keep them interesting.

From this, I learn how to shape my lyrics around emotion and keep the hook short and catchy. This video helped me understand structure better and gave me a clear direction before I started writing my own song.

The research I did gave me a good understanding of songwriting theory, but I wanted to make my learning more practical. I realised that to truly understand how to start writing, I needed to learn from someone with real experience. That’s why I asked Cayden, my collaborator from the university music club, to give me some advice. He has written several rap-style songs before, so I trusted that his guidance would help me apply what I had learned in a real situation.

This advice helped me connect my earlier research with real practice. Instead of overthinking structure, I focused on the emotional tone of the song and how it made me feel. Listening to the beat repeatedly helped me imagine the type of relationship I wanted to describe, and the melody started forming naturally in my head. I also realised that writing doesn’t need to be formal, it’s more about finding what feels true and fits the rhythm.

During this stage, I asked Cayden for help because he had been supporting me with both melody and lyrics ideas for Verse 2. Since he already knew the mood and direction I was going for, he quickly understood what I wanted to express and came up with a line suggestion: “dressing so fine, i know u can’t lie, that I’m the star in the party.” His suggestion fit well with the confident and playful tone I aimed for. However, after reading and listening to it several times, I noticed that the line still didn’t completely fit with the beat, it sounded slightly rushed compared to the rhythm. Even so, this was a very helpful idea because it gave me a clearer direction to adjust my lyric later on.

After trying Cayden’s suggestion several times, I realised that although the line “dressing so fine, I know u can’t lie, that I’m the star in the party” sounded good, it still didn’t completely fit with the existing melody. The rhythm felt slightly short compared to the previous bar, which made the verse lose its flow. To fix this, I carefully replayed the beat and sang along multiple times to identify what was missing. I noticed that I needed to add two extra syllables to make the lyric perfectly match the melody and timing. To find the best way to extend the line, I asked ChatGPT for suggestions based on Cayden’s original phrase. It provided several options, including “whole damn party,” “real big party,” and “late night party.” After considering the tone and atmosphere of my song, I chose “late night party” because it best suited the chill and romantic vibe I wanted.

This is my final version of Verse 2, written from the female perspective to show her confidence, charm, and love for her partner.

The line “perform like a queen and you have never seen me outstanding one-dayyyy” compares her to a queen shining on stage, surprising her partner with her confidence and energy. The rhyme between “slay” and “one-day” creates a catchy, playful rhythm that matches the chill beat.

In “Ferrari or Bentley, never need those even Paris,” she expresses that love means more than material things - the relationship itself is what makes her happy. The line “the only one thing let me crazy making this song with u super catchy” reflects excitement and joy in creating something fun together with her partner.

Words like “catchy,” “fancy,” “Hennessy,” “tipsy,” and “party” are intentionally chosen to rhyme and maintain flow, giving the verse a smooth, confident, and upbeat vibe.

This verse captures the balance between sweetness and self-assurance, showing how the female character mirrors her partner’s affection while keeping her own unique voice and energy.

I sent my demo lyrics to a senior member of my university’s music club, who has been leading the club for over five years. I trusted his opinion because he often helps new members refine their lyrics and understands both the creative and technical sides of songwriting. I wanted someone who could give me constructive, detailed feedback rather than just general compliments. After reading my song, he said that it had a nice chill vibe overall and that the two perspectives between Verse 1 and Verse 2 made the story more engaging. However, he also noticed a small but important issue that I had completely overlooked. In Chorus 3, which was meant to be from the female perspective, I had accidentally kept the same pronouns as in the earlier choruses, such as “she” and “queen.” He explained that this made the lyrics sound inconsistent and suggested that I adjust the wording to match the perspective so that the song would sound smoother and more natural.

At first, I felt quite nervous because I had never edited a full track before. Still, I knew that this was a valuable chance to challenge myself and apply what I had learned. I imported Cayden’s voice parts along with my own vocals into CapCut, since it’s an easy tool for beginners. I started by aligning the beats, trimming small pauses, and balancing the volume between both voices. I also adjusted the timing of some words that didn’t match the instrumental flow, so the transitions between our verses and the chorus sounded smoother.

Although the process took several hours of trial and error, it taught me how to handle unexpected problems independently and how to use sound editing tools to achieve a clean, cohesive final track. This became one of the most rewarding parts of my learning journey, as I successfully completed the final version on my own.

Completing this song is one of the proudest achievements I have had so far. It showed me that passion and effort can overcome inexperience. Although the song is not perfect, it represents my growth, determination, and creativity. Most importantly, this experience has motivated me to keep challenging myself in the future by exploring different music genres such as R&B, pop, or acoustic. I want to continue learning, experimenting, and discovering my own musical style, because I believe that every new genre will teach me more about emotions, techniques, and the endless possibilities of creativity.
