In her writing she describe how her mother were being treated since she couldn't speak English as everybody else. Is was being mistreated since people didn't think she was well educated. Tan wanted to make sure that people knew that her mother can express herself through her English. That her English is the same as everybody else.

The same was true with the word analogies, pairs of words in which you were supposed to find some sort of  logical, semantic relationships.

It has become our language of intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to family talk, the language I grew up with.
