What I learned

I learned many things about my heritage, but one thing that stood out to me was the different words used in England. For example, erasers in England are called "rubbers". There are also different spellings of words, such as "favorite", as spelled in America, but spelled as "favourite" in England. There are also different eating traditions, such as having vinegar with a meal.

Another thing I learned about my heritage has to do with the Italian side. There are traditions circled around birth, marriage and death that are almost always celebrated by specific foods. New mothers are served chicken broth and milk to give her strength and nourishment for the baby. Marriage is celebrated with large feasts, while it is tradition to serve bright colored foods at a funeral or burial.

To conclude, this project also taught me different things about holidays. I learned is that children in Mexico do not receive presents on Christmas Day. They receive gifts on January 6, the day on which Mexicans celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men. To celebrate the return of spring, children in England dance around tall poles decorated with ribbons, called maypoles. Their dancing wraps the ribbons tightly around the pole. Finally, in Italy there is a holiday called "All Saints Day". This is a day taken to celebrate all saints, known and unknown. This is usually congratulated with a big feast in the community.
