What do you see? I see progressivism as child-centred; valuing the child more than the acquisition of knowledge. The child is placed in situations where they are able to construct their own knowledge.
What do you think about that? I think that this makes knowledge more meaningful and valuable to students - by coming to conclusions themselves, rather than being told something.
What does it make you wonder? How teachers monitor the progress of students and identify where they need to go next if progressives do not 'use benchmarks or standards to determine how children ought to mature'.
- Alissa

I can see that there is no single agreed definition of a 'progressive' teacher. It then relates to the ideology that, that teacher identifies with. For example, Steiner, Montessori or Reggio Emilia.

See: It's child centred, values people more than knowledge, children are seen as 'free spirits' and are encouraged to naturally find themselves and who they are.

Think: I like that children 'should be allowed to freely explore their environments in order to grow and change as naturally as possible, without being burdened with adult expectations that restrict personal development'.

Wonder: I wonder how teachers snd students get things done when students are encouraged to work things out for themselves instead of learning specific skills.

I wonder why we have not found a cohesive "in-between" conservatism and progressivism? How can there be two major ends of the scale with nothing between?

Why isn't ideology for teaching practices and education a spectrum where teachers can flow and move throughout, dependent upon situation or required learning outcomes for students? Do we have to be in a "fixed" theoretical and ideological position?
