She consistently pays attention to what she feels mentally and physically, playing a big role of who she is. Sal also shows determination and empathy in a lot of instances all through the book. Her main motivation was the fate and whereabouts of her mother. From discovering her mother's death, she remembers her past memories with her mom, and uses them to keep moving forward in life. As the narrator, Sal's view is the center of the book. The challenges she faces is necessary to unfold the events in the story.

This song expresses the feeling of breaking free from difficult obstacles, looking for something better on the other side. Fast Car connects to how Sal tries her best to understand why her mother "left" her family.

She also tells them what she feels about the tragic disappearance of her mother. Throughout the story and it's events, Sal comes to find her identity, more about her family, and how to endure and manage her emotions. Sal grows as a person and finds her way to continue her life.
