The overall tone of the book Walk Two Moons, is a deep, wholehearted search of themes like anguish, family, identity compassion, and many others. An example is when Sal feels empathy and understands the meaning of the quote, "Don't judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins." Also, Sal sympathizes with Margret loss and pushes the hatred towards Margret away.

Many unknown characters in the story passed away from tragic events, causing Sal and her family eternal grief. One event is when Sal imagines what could have happened during the bus crash that took her mothers life.
