Chlamydia is a common STD which everyone is susceptible to. It is caused by a bacteria called chlamydia trachomatis. Its not as dangerous as a lot of other STD's but can still cause a lot of trouble for a person under certain situations.

Chlamydia is spread through vaginal, oral or anal sex and though it is a disease that can infect everyone it is women(especially young women) whom are a lot more at risk of getting infected.

If you are sexually active it is very important to stay getting tested for your own health and safety, especially if you are a man having sex with other men or 25 and younger sexually active woman, because you are at a much higher risk of getting chlamydia. Chlamydia symptoms aren't super obvious, which makes it very easy to not know if your infected. For the few symptom's it does have they vary in men and women.

Even though its not as common in men it is still very possible for them to get chlamydia. Their symptoms include discharge from the penis, a burning sensation when urinating, and pain or swelling in either one or both of their balls (this one is less common).

Women who have chlamydia have some subtle symptoms that could be mistaken for just a UTI. The symptoms include abnormal vaginal discharge which may also have a strong smell and/or a burning sensation whilst urinating.

Chlamydia though not one of the more dangerous STD's can still have long term effects on individuals if left untreated. Also including a higher risk of getting HIV and reactive arthritis which can also effect women.

Women who go untreated with chlamydia are at a very high risk of very dangerous permanent changes. These effects include getting PID which causes permanent damage to the reproductive system, long term pelvic pain, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy.

Baby's born from a mother who has chlamydia will also inherit chlamydia from them. The baby will then be at risk for eye infections along with pneumonia. While being pregnant and having chlamydia can also cause an early birth.

Chlamydia is treated pretty simply with antibiotics. Depending on the severity it can be a one time dose or have to take a dose every day for seven days.
