In the 1930s the Asahi baseball team was the pride of Vancouver’s Little Tokyo. In a David vs. Goliath triumph over bigger Caucasian teams, the upstart Japanese-Canadian players became unbeatable, winning the prestigious Pacific Northwest Championship for five consecutive years. But by 1942 Canada was at war with Japan and soon everyone of Japanese descent, whether born in Canada or not, was sent to internment camps. The CBC’s Duncan McCue profiles how one team member faced up to hardship, racism and isolation, and survived to see his team inducted into Canada’s Baseball Hall of Fame.

East of the Rockies – (App) an experimental augmented reality story written by Joy Kogawa, one of Canada’s most acclaimed and celebrated literary figures. The story is told from the perspective of Yuki, a 17-year old girl forced from her home and made to live in the Slocan internment camp during the 2nd WW.

Users follow the story by tapping, swiping, inspecting and zooming in on key elements within each scene. Every interaction activates a piece of scripted narrative voiced by Joy’s own granddaughter. Spoken in the first person, each line illuminates a different aspect of life in the camp, as documented in Yuki’s journal.
