World War One was the first major war that happened on a global scale. The majority of the war was in Europe, but it was really expensive fight. It was not only costing in monetary values, but World War One led to 31 million deaths. All people see was death after the war period. The war also led to poverty and economic failure. This set the mood of the time to be very depressing. Following WWI was the Roaring 20s and the Great Depression. The Roaring 20s was a period of prosperity for the United States of America. The new expression of cultures such as the African Americans begin to occur. This was known as the Harlem Renaissance. Beside of culture, Many industries were able to thrive. Unfortunately, in 1919, the stock market crashed beginning the start of the great depression. The Great Depression was a chaotic era for the US Economy. Most of the industries went to rumbles. Resulting in the unemployment rate skyrocketing. Although this was occurring, many authors was still able to write stories out of this time period. This form of writing mainly consist of first person point of view and does not following any chronicle order of writing. This was also known was the Lost Generation. This form of writing mainly emphasize occurances throughout the character's everyday life. Using everyday words. This form of writing greatly emphasizes inner self thinking and analysis.
(Modernism & English Literature, by Flippin' English, 10 Apr 2016)

During Modernism, people wanted to forget about the past and wanted to search for a new form of expression. They believed that people are leading to destruction. Modernist contradicted this by embracing individualism in a person and experimentation. They wanted and believed they could build a better society. They praised intelligence and creativity.

Modernism introduced new concepts and forms of "isms" such as the following; cubism, symbolism, and futurism. People also had different ways of writing, such as Steam of Consciousness. This is when a writer ignores orderly structure and writes in fragmented thoughts. Modernist were very interested in the new technology such as glass, steel and concrete in their buildings.Modernist were always open to new ideas. A man named Georgii Krutikov suggested a city be held together through electrical currents. Although it seemed strange considering there was barely enough electricity to keep a light on, these ideas were still praised and improved on because that is what Modernism focused on; new ideas.
“Modernism.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., www.britannica.com/video/186408/Modernism-art-design.

F. Scott Fitzgerald was an American writer who had a very influential contribution to Modernism. His work often involved aspects of Modernism and emphasized individualism on his characters. One of his famous books was The Great Gatsby. The Great Gatsby real demonstrated breaking out of societies rules and losing control. His book was also not chronologically in order. This is similar to modernist trying to find a new way of expressing life.
“Modernism and Realism in The Great Gatsby.” SparkNotes, SparkNotes, www.sparknotes.com/lit/gatsby/context/literary/modernism-and-realism-in-the-great-gatsby/.
