Comparison between modern family dynamics and the family dynamics found within the Simpsons

As a 21st century teen, I can determine that there are many differences between modern family dynamics and those of the Simpsons 90's TV family. These differences can be attributed to the rise of dual-income families, the evolution of technology and the emergence of helicopter parenting. In the following paragraphs, I will detail how these changes have caused a shift in family dynamics from the 90s up until now.

For starters, the rise of dual-income households since the 90s has made a noticeable difference in modern family dynamics. The percentage of dual-income households has risen from 42% to 64% since the early 90s. This statistic is evident when observing modern family dynamics in comparison to the family dynamics found in the television series "The Simpsons". The Simpsons are one of the many single income families in the series. The rise in dual-income families since the 90s has made it so that one parent is not consistently in the home managing day to day activities. This cultural shift has lead to an increased need for babysitters and daycares that have zero representation in the Simpsons universe.

Secondly, the evolution of technology has prompted a significant change in households. Advancements in technology have introduced video games, the internet and cellphones into nearly every household. Cellphones, in particular, have impacted family life as it is a method in which parents can maintain contact with their children at all times. Parents throughout the 90s and in “The Simpsons” did not have this luxury. This is made evident in the episode "Cape Feare" where Bart is kidnapped by Sideshow Bob leaving his parents clueless as to where their son had gone. GPS tracking, closed-circuit video footage, facebook and Amber Alerts would have aided in locating Bart more quickly than if this incident had happened in the 90s.

My third and final distinction is that "Helicopter Parenting is not present throughout the program as all the parents in Springfield appear to be very relaxed about the activities of their children. The Simpson's reflect an exaggerated relaxed style of parenting that existed before the 2000s. Marge and Homer do not seem concerned with the education or unstructured and unsupervised activities of their children. Parents in the Simpsons are not concerned about the trouble or danger that their children could potentially get into. The lack of parental awareness is demonstrated in the episode “Bart the Daredevil” where nearly the entire town comes to witness Bart attempt absurd stunts on his skateboard. This example is in stark contrast to the helicopter style of parenting that is prevalent in some households today.

The Simpsons are a fictional family that serve as the main characters in the animated T.V. series “The Simpsons”. This industrial nuclear family is made up of five members; Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie. The Simpson Family was created to be a satirical parody of the families represented on TV from the 50s through 80s. The show takes place in the fictional, wacky town of Springfield where outrageous adventures appear to be the daily norm. Since its inception in 1990, “The Simpsons” have inspired countless other tv programs that have attempted to replicate the show's formula of success. These programs include “Family Guy”, “American Dad”, “Bob's Burgers” and many more.

-Homer Simpson is a middle aged, Husband, and Father.

-Homer takes on the role of the financial provider in the simpson household.

-Homer is a parody of the “father knows best” figure represented in earlier tv families. Tv fathers were generally brave, intelligent, leaders prior to the 90’s. Homer contrasted this representation.

-Homer is a lazy, obese, simpleton who allows his grotesque eating and drinking habits dominate a large portion of his free time.

-Homer is also a follower who constantly allows his stupidity to lead him on new adventures that the show’s content is often centered around.

-For instance in the episode “Marge vs. the monorail” Homer takes on a new job as a monorail conductor. However Homers lack of experience and wit nearly causes him to kill everyone on the train.

-Homers many shortcomings are all made up for by the deep love and compassion he has for his family. He can prove to be a bad father at times but his intentions beneath the actions are always pure.

-The love Homer has for his family is demonstrated in the episode “You only move twice”. Things couldn't get much better for Homer in this episode when he gets a new, prestigious job in a new town that Homer falls in love with. Despite Homers new success he opts to move back to Springfield when his family has a tough time with the move.

-Family comes first for Homer.

For instance the episode “the springfield connection” has marge join the springfield police force only to discover the corruption entrenched within it.
-Episodes like “the Springfield connection” demonstrate Marges adventurous side.

How "The Simpsons" represents the 90s

-The earlier seasons of the Simpsons do a fantastic job of representing the cultural traits and distinctions found throughout the nineties. The Simpsons is meant to be a satirical take on reality so the representation is often over the top yet accurate nonetheless.

-The Simpson family has one single financial provider which was much more common during the 90s.

-lack of advanced technology. For instance there are no laptops, cell phones or complicated video game technology.

-relaxed style of parenting (Helicopter parenting was not yet prominent in western civilisation) Ex: Both Bart and Lisa regularly watch an extremely violent cartoon caled “itchy and scratchy” with no level of concern from Homer or Marge.

-”The Simpsons” pokes fun at the controversial status that nuclear power developed during the nineties. Homer Simpson is a nuclear power inspector yet knows absolutely nothing about nuclear power. The nuclear power plant has an immense impact on the environment in Springfield. For example some fish mutated to have three eyes as a result of the nuclear power plant.

-Many references to actors or ideas relevant to nineties pop culture. Ex: The character “McBain” is meant to parody the popular nineties action star Arnold Schwarzenegger. The episode “Stark Raving Dad” has Homer placed in a mental hospital where he's forced to room with a man who believes he’s michael Jackson (the character is voiced by Michael jackson). In season three's episode “Homer at the bat” Mr.Burns pays the greatest baseball players of the nineties to play for their nuclear power plant baseball team.

-There is representation of divorce in the series when Milhouse's parents split. Prior to the nineties divorce was rarely shown on television of if it was it was considered controversial. Milhouse's parents divorce in the episode “A Milhouse Divided”.

My parents are the authoritative figures in my household.

-My parents have stricter expectations than Marge and Homer when it comes to my sister and I. Homer and Marge merely expect Bart to pass the fourth grade. My parents anticipate a higher standard than simply passing a class.

-My father is a nurse and works unusual hours at the hospital. This causes complications when it comes to spending time with one another. The simpsons do not have this same problem as Homer works a 9-5 job at the nuclear power plant.

-The simpsons attend church every Sunday. My family does not share this habit.

-The children in my household are not strictly independant like Bart and Lisa. My sister and I depend on our parents for moral, and financial support.

-One conflict featured throughout the series "The Simpsons" is the struggle that Marge and Homer experience trying to maintain a happy and healthy marriage.
-Many episodes are centred around Marge and Homer working through the various obstacles in their relationship.
-For instance in the episode “Secrets of a Successful Marriage”, Homer begins teaching a class on the importance of maintaining a healthy marriage. In doing so, he jeopardizes his own marriage when Marge finds out he has been revealing their marriage secrets throughout these classes. As a result, Marge throws Homer out of the house and questions the future of their marriage. However, this conflict is soon resolved when Homer makes a huge romantic gesture in downtown Springfield to win back Marge's love.

The character of Danny Tanner was played by actor Bob Saget. Danny was 30 when the show started and was 38 when the show ended. Danny was a widower whose wife had been killed by a drunk driver leaving him a single parent to three daughters: Donna Jo (aka DJ), Stephanie, and Michelle. Danny worked as a newscaster on the television show Wake Up San Francisco and was a very sensitive and responsible dad. Danny’s brother-in-law, Jesse Katsopolis and his best friend, Joey Gladstone, moved in with Danny to help him raise his girls after the death of his wife.

During his free time, Danny typically did things like household chores, taking his girls to their activities, or by doing things with Joey and Jesse.

Danny’s roles: Danny was the widowed father and his role was to look after the kids and financially support the family. Danny was a very present dad who was there for his kids when they needed him, he paid the bills, cooked meals, and he played both the role of father and mother since the girls’ mother passed away. Danny was a very sensitive person who loved and adored his daughters and was not afraid to parent them when he did not like their behaviour or their choices. Danny was very good at helping to resolve family issues and he was also an self-admitted clean freak.

In Full House, Danny Tanner wore the pants in the family not only because he was the girls’ father but because the girls’ mother had died. Danny is also a male role model for his brother-in-law Jesse and best friend Joey. Danny teaches both of these characters about self-sacrifice, dedication to family and the importance of teaching by example.

Jesse loved spending time with his wife and kids, as well as his nieces.

-Despite the Simpsons dysfunctional nature they are effective problem solvers at times.
-When an issue arises, each member of the family is willing to address the problem in a manner that is in the best interest of the family as a whole.
-This is proven in the episode “$pringfield (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling)” where Marge develops a gambling addiction. The family as a whole is shown to counsel Marge while trying to put an end to her gambling addiction. Homer, Bart, and Lisa eventually succeed in their efforts and put an end to Marge's destructive gambling.

Especially in comparison to many family tv shows from the 50’s through 80’s such as “the cosby show” and “Partridge Family”.

-The lack of an authoritative figure in the simpson household is evident when looking at the simpson children.
-Bart seems to have no respect for authority as no one is safe from being the victim of his next prank. One way Bart demonstrates his lack of respect for authority is by refusing to call his father “dad” and instead referring to him as “Homer”.

-On the other hand Lisa may have respect for her parents but she neglects their authority just as much as Bart. Due to Lisa's superior intelligence she often feels that she doesn't require her parents supervision or advice.

-Homers oblivious nature and Marge's frequent emotional breakdowns may be contributing factors to Bart and Lisa's independence.

Poor division of labour is brought attention to in the episodes and "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad House" and "Teacher's Pet", resolving when the rest of the family agree to start taking on more responsibilities around the house. This kind of conflict wouldn't have occurred if Family Matters had been made in an earlier decade, as women were expected to look after the household without complaint.

The Winslow children respect and are close to their parents, often showing affective nurturance for Carl and Harriette.

Racism
According to William Strauss, an author known for his part in forming the Strauss–Howe generational theory, Gen Xers were “the least racist of today's generations”. This reflects the show, as all the protagonists are black, which would have been an impossible sight in decades prior. Further, the show also addresses racial issues, in the episode "Good Cop, Bad Cop" for example, issues that would not have been talked about on television in the past.
Dual income household
Gen Xers and Baby Busters, the cohorts likely to have produced the show, both grew up with both parents working or to see the rise in dual income families. This is reflected in Family Matters, as both Carl and Harriette work full time jobs.
Entrepreneurship
According to The New York Times "PRELUDES; A Generation of Freelancers", Generation X has been attributed with entrepreneurship and self-employment, these qualities being manifested in Rachel and Steve.
Difficulty in finding jobs
There weren't many job opportunities available to Gen Xers when they entered the workforce, as Baby Boomers still made up a large percentage of the workforce. The frustrations that came from this issue that plagued Gen Xers is evident in the episode "Two-Income Family", where Harriette finds difficulty in finding a new job after she was fired.

The family members always end their problem solving discussions with a hug. This reflected an approach where it was better if you told the truth and sought help from people you know and trust to help you deal with your problem, specifically from adults like a parent or another adult family member who could offer the wisdom that comes from experience, and, that it was important to actually deal with your problem.

Full House represented the millennial cohort because characters like Joey and Jesse went after their dream jobs and they felt like they were entitled to succeed right away. As well, DJ and Stephanie were both selfish at times and were thinking primarily about what was best for themselves. Kimmy Gibbler is a prime example of a millennial teen because she was always barging into the Tanner house and making herself at home whether by making food, using their stuff, or listening to their conversation. Danny Tanner was an example of helicopter parenting because he was always intervening; making sure that the girls are safe and sound. This can be seen in season 1, episode 3, when Danny, Jesse and Joey all go to Stephanie’s school to check on her on her first day of kindergarten.

-Bart respects Marge slightly more than Homer
-Despite Bart's reckless nature he possesses a moral conscience when it comes to his family (especially his mother). For example in the episode “Marge be not proud” Bart is caught shoplifting before christmas. Bart is strained when Marge perceives the incident as a loss of innocence for Bart and starts treating him differently. The rest of the episode follows the extremes Bart goes to in attempts to make it up to his mother.
