Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau

Theme statement: People are better off with less government because they'll make decisions based on their conscience, not what benefits them and hurts others. This shows Transcendentalism because it plays on the idea that humans are inherently good
“Can there not be a government in which majorities do not virtually decide right and wrong, but conscience?” Shows that people would be better off if laws were moral and ethical, not based on majority rule
“The character inherent in the American people has done all that has been accomplished and it would’ve done somewhat more, if the government had not sometimes got in its way” American citizens are good people, and they could've done more if the government didn't step in.
Pop culture connection- people in the 21st century overstep laws more often if doing so will help somebody

Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Theme Statement: Nature is all-knowing and can answer all questions, and becoming one with nature can heal. Transcendentalist because it talks about how becoming one with nature can benefit people “Undoubtedly we have no questions to ask which are unanswerable. We must trust the perfection of the creation so far, as to believe that whatever curiosity the order of things has awakened in our minds, the order of things can satisfy.” This quote shows that nature will eventually answer all questions with time. “In the woods, we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befal me in life,–no disgrace, no calamity, (leaving me my eyes,) which nature cannot repair.” This quote shows that nature is healing as well, and can help improve a person's state of mind. A connection to pop culture would be people who believe natural remedies are better and healthier than prescribed medicines

Theme: Fear of darkness, loneliness, and death can cause somebody to lose their sanity.
“Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of the bird, and bust and door” This quote shows that he's starting to go crazy. He knows the raven will say nevermore, yet he decides to ask it questions.
“Respite-- respite and nepenthe, from thy memories of Lenore” Lenore, his wife, is dead. He believes the raven has supernatural power so he asks to be freed of any memories of her. He wants this because remembering her just makes him feel lonely, and he doesn't want that.
Dark Romantic connection: He believes animals can talk, and he also believes that the raven has supernatural powers
Pop Culture Connection: The Baltimore Ravens name was inspired by this poem, as it won a fan contest when it was announced that Baltimore was getting a football team
