In Chapter 24, we meet Mr. Antolini. When chatting with Holden, he writes down a quote from psychoanalyst Wilhelm Stekel: "The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one" (244). Please explain the significance of this quote. Why do you think he shares this with Holden? Was this the right thing to do? How do you think it impacts Holden? by Vannah Scarborough

I believe that Mr. Antonlini thinks that him himself is a very wise man filled with a lot of experiences and wisdom. This quote that Mr. Antolini says is given to Holden for good reason. Its to try and help him get through whatever he is going through right now. He knew that there was something wrong with Holden because of experiences. This quote means that a mature man isn't just going to die when things get hard. I feel like this quote is exactly meant for Holden. Mature people don't just give up when times get hard they learn from whatever happened so they can pass it on. If this quote was said to anyone else in the novel i feel like it wouldn't really be taken seriously but if holden actually thinks about what he said it might help him so much in his life.

When Holden goes to stay with Mr. Antolini, he shares a quote with Holden from a psychoanalyst saying, "The mark of the immature man is the he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one" (244). I believe that Mr. Atonlini did the right thing by sharing this quote with Holden. Mr. Atonlini could tell that something was going on with Holden just like Carl Luce realizing something was up with Holden. I think this quote shared by Mr. Atonlini best means that the immature man wants to die for a cause like Holden fighting for not maturing and protecting the innocence of youth while the mature man accepts the word and tries to live the best way he can. I do not think though that Holden took this quote too personally. To Holden he probably feels like this is just some random quote said by a stupid adult which is why he doesn't really absorb the knowledge from the quote.

He means that it's more mature for someone to live and try to see a cause through than it is to die for it. Because dying is the end of the story, there's nothing left you can do from there. But if you can keep living you have the ability to change things and follow through with that cause. He says this to Holden as a mentor to give him some really good advice. Which could be taken as not just dying in real life but in your oppinions and mindset as well. Sometimes it's better to move on from one subject or oppinion that you had your mind set on that it is to die on that hill.

"The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one(244)." The meaning of this quote is very interesting to me. Mr. Antolini share this with Holden because he knows that Holden will understand what it means, and that he cares for Holden as a person and wants him to live. In Holden's case he is immature because of Allie's death, the words of this quote show Holden that he is the immature man that wants to die in some noble way. like when he says he wants to ride the atomic bomb and take all those people with me. This is noble in Holden's immature state of mind. While the Humble man wich in this case is Mr. Antolini who is humbly caring for holden and wants him to live. I think it was the right thing to do because i don't think anyone else could really help Holden in any other way but Mr. Antolini.

The quote that was given from Mr. Antolini is given to Holden to help him in what Holden is going through. Mr. Antolini can read Holden and tell that he is about to go through a tremendous fall and wants to help him prevent it. The cause that Holden is going through is of that childhood is the state of grace for people and adulthood is this point in life, where good qualities turn to bad. Holden is trying to force his way to be in a continual childhood because he sees adulthood almost as an intrinsic evil. It is the right thing to give a message like this so Holden can contemplate the meaning of the quote and reflect on it in regards to his own life so he can't harm himself. In the end Holden needs to realize that growing up is a part of life. Holden's best memories are from the past with Allie and Pheobe but it's the present and he needs to learn to except what's reality.

Holden doesn't trust most people and when he calls him we already know that he must be a really great guy. He gives this advice to Holden because he is worried about him and he cares for him almost like he would care for his own son. Holden is obviously not okay right now and Mr. Antolini can see this. I think he is saying that you have to learn how to live for yourself and not worry as much about other people and how they want to live their life. It is saying that an immature man wants to die for a cause and in this case for Holden it would be fighting for what he believes in which is protecting the innocence of kids like his sister. It definitely think Mr. Antolini did the right thing by giving Holden this quote and hoping that he will think about it and take it into consideration.

This quote by Mr. Antolini is significant because it is a commentary about how someone (Holden in this case) chooses to live their life, and whether or not they are "mature". Mr. Antolini shares this quote by Wilhelm Stekel with Holden in an effort to pass on some knowledge to the next generation, as well as help Holden personally, and to work him through his crippling depression. Yes, I believe that Mr. Antolini was right to share this line with Holden, due to the fact that it caused him, even for a moment, to rethink his life, and see if he was "ready to die" , or to "live humbly". This impacts Holden by causing him to have second thoughts about what it means to grow up, which is a theme we will see again towards the conclusion of the novel.

This quote means that someone who is immature will do anything for a reason that he or she thinks the most of while as a mature man they think of all the consequences it can also be taken as how a immature man will not care for a cause for anything if they think it is no important like Holden and his grades if their not important to them but the mature man will live for a reason and care for anything that he doses or comes into his life and have an emphasis for what they do and for others in what they do and not just think its phony and not do anything about it because he realizes there's a reason for anything. I think Mr. Antolini cares for Holden in a parenting sort of way and that's why he shares that with Holden because he realizes what Holden is going through and I think it was the best thing to do because it plans the seed of knowledge to put in Holden's head.

I do not really understand the context of the quote from Mr. Antolini's perspective. I do not understand what provoked him to tell Holden that other than it is just all round good advice. I don't see how it was specific to Holden. I think that this impacts Holden in a big way because he says in the book that he sill has the paper to this day. However I do not know how it impacted him in a good or negative ways I think it probably impacted him in a bad way because it is talking about death and he is some what suicidal.

The quote says that an immature man wants honor and to end with a cause. A mature man realizes that honor is unnecessary and that life is underrated. This goes back to Holden's quote about wanting to sit on the atomic bomb, saving everyone and dying in the process. He shares this with Holden to provide insight to him on how his behaviors seem from the outside looking in and to subtlely tell Holden he needs to grow up. This was the right thing to do, it makes Holden angry. Holden knows he's right, but doesn't want to admit it. It really leaves a mark on Holden for the rest of the novel.

Pride is such a huge thing to some people and the immature man would think he would be remembered as this super hero and it would boost his ego, while the mature man would live humbly knowing that he could stay alive and make much more of an impact and he wouldn’t need to be handed a crown to be proud of himself.

And he is trying to tell Holden something that will resonate with him in the long run. In a way he will understand. He wants to explain it to Holden that hits close to home, so it will have more impact. I think it hits Holden deep. All this time we have seen Holden not necessarily wanting to die but definitely having some suicidal tendencies and Mr Antonali using both of these ideas that Holden feels very deeply about to tell Holden that life is worth living. I think he shares this quote with Holden because Holden doesn’t realize how important the little things in life are. Holden can only see the big picture of all these important people being worshipped and given all this attention, and he doesn’t realize how important the unnoticed acts of kindness are. I think this quote will help Holden if he actually takes time to try and understand it. Holden is an intelligent person he just needs someone to guide him a little bit. I think it will impact Holden in a positive way, hopefully it will help him become more open minded and start judging people less.
