I used the book Jazz by John Fordham (ISBN 0 7513 0050 0)

This book is full of really useful info, such as a timeline of when things happened with Big Band music. This was great for getting an idea of what the influences of the time were and how they impacted Big Band music.

It also talks about the techniques used for writing the instrument parts and how they recorded the instruments at the time.

This was all useful as it gave me ideas of how to write authentic music in this style.
