  • Many Sought religious freedom- Different groups of religions settled in different parts of America 
Separatists- Plymouth
Quakers- Pennsylvania
Puritans- Massachusetts
Anne Hutchinson followers- New Hampshire and Maine
  • Many Sought riches
Virginia Company (London company)- Jamestown
English immigrants- Caribbean (Sugar)
  • Sought Military advantages
Settlers led by James Oglethorpe- Georgia

* Many colonists sought religious freedom, thus settled away from where they were persecuted/ where other religions were. 
*Some regions of the south and the Caribbean became regionally different because of a draw from profitable crops/ agriculture (there was also a need for slave labor in these regions, creating more regional differences). 
*There were obvious regional differences in the areas where Europeans took over and areas where Indians remained.
*There were also regional differences in between groups of settlers influenced by the specific cultures and beliefs of where they were from;
           -Spanish
           -Dutch
           -Swedish
          -German 
          -etc.
