Throughout the book, Coates defines and describes the black body as sacred but shackled down by society. Where he must "not be too violent, he must be violent enough to protect himself," while to "survive and shield his body he must learn his neighborhood's language," and while he must balance school with his societal life he is shackled down by the system either way. Coates means losing his own body as falling prey to the system. To explain, as societal has already predicted an ordinary day to consist of "beatings, shootings, or a pregnancy," him losing the shackle of trying to "grow up and be somebody," as mentioned on page 25, and following the laws of the street because society in a way has already intended black lives to stay there

Coates describes the black body by asking "the question of how one should live with a black body is the question of life." He shows how racism works through the control exploitation and manipulation of the black body resulting in the fragility of the black body in a racist society. Coates brings back how the black body came to be so fragile by bringing up colonialism and slavery. He describes how the black body was turned into an object with a monetary value. He also describes the black body as something that could very easily be lost. He further adds on to his argument by saying the places where he grew up and other people like him grew up it was not easy to remain with your body. His upbringing was not pleasant and he thinks people like him should not have to grow up and live like this where you can lose your body.

Ta-Nehisi Coates book "Between The World and me" is written as a letter for the author's teenage son named Samori. He talks about the feelings, symbolism and realities of being a black person in the United States. Throughout the book, Coates, describes the black body as as a beautiful and powerful vessel that has been in chains for centuries and treated with oppression by its own people(the whites)."Never forget that for 250 years black people were born into chains-whole generations who knew nothing but chains." What Coates means when he refers to the idea of losing his own body, is that he fears being taken advantage or even killed by the system of the United Sates, like his ancestors and the victims who were killed in tragic police brutality events, like Prince Jones and Michael Brown sadly did. He fears the system of his own country where he "must only be violent to protect himself", or else. So sum it all up, when Coates refers to losing his body, he means being taken down and oppressed by society.

He describes the black body as beauty. When Coates refers to the idea of losing his own body he means like loosing his dignity , his rights , and himself as a person by not taking care of himself . He basically doesn't want black people to lose their body by polices mostly . Their taking advantage of these kids just to do it on there own . So he tells his son don't let anyone hurt you in your own body or don't let them take advantage of you because of your color .
