The U.S. Constitution structures our government so that it is a central government but with limited powers. Our government is considered a federal republic because of the shared power between state and national government, and the concepts like popular sovereignty and representation.

The founders of the Constitution were afraid that if the central government were too strong, it would lead to another situation like that with Great Britain. This is why the central government is limited. Giving more power to the states allows for more freedoms between the various states and their people. The rules set forth by the Constitution protect us from any leader who may strive for too much power.

Having a limited government is very important to a democracy, and the Constitution makes sure to not only list the national government's powers, but also what they can't do, keeping leaders from trying to pull anything that could harm the American people.
