During the 60s in Japan, anime began to change and take on a lot of the distinguishing characteristics we associate with it today. Osamu Tezuka is credited as the person responsible for pioneering this type of style where characters were drawn with large eyes and large, round heads. Tezuka's inspiration stemmed from Disney and this inspiration is what influenced his style.

Osamu Tezuka was also responsible for creating Astro Boy (1963), which would become one of the animes that defined the 60s and ultimately helped propel anime into what it is today. This is largely due to the fact that Astro Boy was the first anime that was shown widely to Western audiences. Astro Boy quickly became popular in the U.S. and even influenced U.S. pop culture, and it was this success, combined with the rise of television, that paved the way for the anime industry.

It took some time for Japan to recover from WWII but the Korean War along with the creation of new laws, programs and organizations helped boost Japan to become the second largest capitalist economy in the world by 1968. This meant that the quality of life in Japan became a whole lot better and that ordinary people now had enough money to spend on entertainment, leisure, and consumer goods. This impacted the anime industry because the economic boom in Japan made it a lot more common and mainstream, meaning a lot more people got to enjoy it.
