Before The War; Jerry Moore

Jerry Moore being a son of a freed slave from a free state, received one of the better treatments from his owner. Throughout his enslavement as a young boy, Moore received candy on Saturday nights, gifted 25cents when the circus came to town, and paid for the odd jobs he completed. Moore and the other Van Zandt slaves were allowed to go almost anywhere in their town without being bothered most of the time. One of Moore's only rules was to not mix with other Negros enslaved. Whilst Moore thought back to how he was treated before the War made him state, "All the Van Zandt Negroes wanted to be free. They didn't understand how well they was bein' treated till after they had to make their own livin' " (Moore 7). From this quote we realize that before the Civil War came into action slavery wasn't as cruel toward these men and woman

During The War; George Fleming

George Fleming, a slave of the Civil War, had different living conditions as to a slave before the war. Slaves during this time were held down to their Masters and had less freedom. They were required to call their owners their Masters, receive a pass (letter from their owner) in order to leave the property, and never ending jobs. But most of the time these slaves weren't at all aloud to leave what so ever. Some were even sent to fight in the war against the Yankees. Even whilst being held in their small living quarters, slaves would become very ill from disease. And because of the poor treatment from the owners, slaves would take care of other slaves. A quote from George states, "During de war, food got kind of scarce but didn't nobody suffer none on our place" (Fleming 32). By going over this quote we learn these men and woman were treated like animals rather than being treated like everyone else of the opposite color. Owner's only used these people for their work and cared for them nothing more.

After The War; Fountain Hughes

After the war slaves continued to suffer more. Most of the time, slaves had harder living conditions than when they were enslaved. After some being released from their owner's they would soon become bound to other people and would have no other choice but to run away. When freedom arrived for some, they tried to stay anywhere possible. Hughes would end up on most nights laying out in the cold just in his underwear. Due to the freedom of their imprisonments, slaves had no money, food or homes. From Hughes view, he had nobody or anything, he suffered trying to live through each night. Fountain later had found little help but today is scarred, he states that he can't even go to church and is left speechless as he is asked why. From Hughes freedom he concluded, "We was just turned out like a lot of cattle. You know how they turn cattle out in a pasture" (Hughes 15). From this statement, this makes us understand the lives of the enslaved/free after the Civil War had occurred. We can understand that even when freedom among the enslaved was declared, they still suffered hard living conditions.
