https://padlet.com/kyleclark11/5js0ijr4tzam473f Native American Reservations were started when white settlers took over their existing land, so tracts of land under the control of the US Government were made for them to relocate to. In the government’s eyes it would minimize conflict between Indians and settlers and encourage Native Americans to take on the ways of the white man. However, many Native Americans were forced onto reservations with catastrophic results and devastating, long-lasting effects. There were many different acts to diminish Indian autonomy before this but as Indians rejected the ideas and fought back, reservations became the best option for the United States. The reason reservations became the best option for only the United States was because daily living on these reservations was hard at best. Rival tribes were thrown together and Indians who were once hunters struggled to become farmers. Indians were “encouraged” or in other words forced to wear non-Indian clothes and learn to read and write English, sew and raise livestock. This was a completely different way of life for the Indians and certainly not right. Even after all the bad the United States had done to the Indians, President Cleveland passed the Dawes Act to divide reservations into small plots of land for individual Indians. The government hoped the legislation would help Indians take in white culture easier and faster and improve their quality of life. Obviously this was not the case and the Dawes Act had a devastating impact on Native American tribes. It decreased the land owned by Indians by more than half of what was left and opened even more land to white settlers and railroads. Much of this land wasn’t good farmland, and many Indians couldn’t even afford the supplies needed to reap a harvest. Prior to the Indian reservation system and the government intervening, Indian women farmed and took care of the land while men hunted and helped protect their tribes. Now, men were forced to farm, and women took on more domestic roles. After a review of how life was on reservations, it was evident that the Dawes Act was severely detrimental to Native Americans and their way of life. Without reservations and the countless acts and orders the United States government took to relocate the Indian Tribes, our way of life and how our society is like today would ultimately be different. However, it would be insane to say that as a country we didn’t treat the Indians horribly when they were here first.
