The earthquake caused another secondary effect: landslides. The seismic motion from the shaking of the earth caused huge landslides across Chile. Enormous flows of debris and water from both the earthquake and tsunami rushed across the Chilean landscape causing floods. Also on May 24, 1960 Volcano Puyehue erupted.

How has Humankind adapted to this?

The mankind has made a huge progress in surviving. It invented medicines, places to get healed, grocery stores to get food instead of hunting, a government to keep in line the people and live in peace instead of fighting like barbarians. Believe it or not, the Humankind has found ways to cope with Earthquakes: the seismograph is an instrument that uses seismic waves to measure the strenght of Earthquakes. It has a very loose "pen" that when the ground vibrates writes the frequency of the Seismic waves. These frequencies are then translated into numbers of the Ritcher's Scale, Mercalli's Intensity Scale or the Moment-Magnitude Scale.

This is a fact

The Earth’s outer layer is called the crust. It covers the Earth like a cracked eggshell. The pieces are called geological plates that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, with the joints known as fault lines. The plates naturally and continually move against each other. Usually they glide smoothly, but in places they catch and pressure gradually builds up. Eventually the pressure becomes too strong and the huge masses of rock that form the plates suddenly shift, releasing waves of energy that race out in concentric circles, rather like the waves in a pond if you throw a stone into the water. This is an earthquake. You can get the idea of how the plates shift if you snap your fingers. Pressure between the fingers builds until . . . snap!
