This training session will help to increase understanding of different safety risks and equip workers with the knowledge and resources on safety strategies available to women. 

A variety of participatory activities will be used to explore the following aspects: 

• General considerations for safety planning   

• Safety strategies for women selling sex on street   

• Safety strategies for women in indoor settings   

• Safety principles in relation to online ‘sex industry’.  

This event will explore these and other questions by considering the complex journeys women experience, and how substance use and involvement in the ‘sex industry’ may intersect at multiple points, including entry into the sex trade, ongoing involvement, and efforts to exit.

Most importantly, it will consider how we can encourage proactive, non-judgemental, and courageous responses from services and practitioners.

As part of this work, we're developing a safety risk questionnaire and are looking for a small group of workers to take part in a feedback workshop. Your views will help ensure the questionnaire is useful in everyday practice.

By taking part, you'll:

• explore how different services respond to women's safety needs

• help shape a resource for practitioners across the sector

• hear about relevant resources and training opportunities.

This learning session explores these questions through the perspectives of those who purchase sex. Drawing on sex buyer reviews, it discusses the dynamics of commercial sexual transactions and considers how unequal power between buyers and sellers contributes to the asymmetrical risks faced by women.

Importantly, the session argues that dominant narratives around the sale of sex tend to focus on reducing interpersonal violence. In doing so, they often overlook issues such as objectification and other more routine, lower-level harms that can escalate into serious incidents and should be recognised as harmful in their own right.
