Death of Socrates

The "Death of Socrates" is a painting by the French painter Jacques-Louis David in 1787. It is a painting of Socrates teaching his students right before he was sentenced to death by drinking Hemlock. This work of art shows proportion and unity among its elements. The painting directs the viewer’s attention immediately to the image of Socrates about to grasp the cup through the angle of lighting in the painting. The contrast between the white drapes of Socrates to the red clothes of the person giving him the poison shows balance between the deep shade of red and the lighter shade of white. From the image in the middle, one’s eyes will then be directed to the surrounding details in the painting such as the man sitting at the leftmost side of the painting and the students of Socrates who are shown with anguished expressions as compared to the unshaken expression on Socrates’ face. This balance and unity among the elements of this fine art ultimately creates a beautiful image.

     Prior to taking up Fine Arts as a subject, my knowledge about architecture was limited merely to the idea that it dealt with the technicalities of designing a building. I did not regard it as art but as merely a practice that involved making the functionality of a structure look presentable. Often, I also confused it with engineering which just shows how clueless I am about the reality of architecture and what it encompasses.


2.     What I learned on architecture after the module       

     After our module on architecture, I was able to learn about the correlation of beauty to architecture. I learned that in architecture, there should be both form and function working together as one. I also learned how to analyze various architecture, specifically Greek and Roman architecture. I now appreciate their form and function knowing the history as well as the effort and motivations that were integral in creating those beautiful structures.


3.     What else I'd like to learn about architecture

     I would like to learn more about the history of architecture, in particular more about the history of Greek and Roman architecture. I found that learning the context as well as the history of the Greek and Roman people back then, it gave me greater understanding and appreciation of an architecture.
