Xinjiang is a northwestern region of China where many Muslims, specifically Uyghurs are held in concentration camps. Uyghurs are a Turkish-speaking Muslim minority. These camps have detained 1.5 million Chinese people so far, inside the camps there is torture and forced labor. China often tries to hide the camps and claim they are re-education camps.

Nuri was born in a prison camp in Kashgar, China. His parents were locked up when his mother was six months pregnant for being associated with Uyghur nationalists. Turkel grew up in the camp for the first 4 months of his life. After his family was released from the camp he went to school and graduated high school. After high school, he went to America for college. When Turkel saw the video (to right), he said "that is exactly what they did to us, they blindfolded us so we didn't see how many people were around us, but we knew." After graduating from the American University in Washington, D.C. Nuri became president of the Uyghur Human Rights Project. He is no longer president but Turkel fights every day for his family and friends in China.

After the attacks on 911, China started to heavily imprison and discriminate against Uyghurs. China threw hundreds of thousands of Muslims in the camp in the week following 911, for those not in the camps there were apps people were forced to download so the government could spy on them. There were cameras all over China, especially in heavily Muslim populated areas. Even government officials came to their house to look through their stuff. In the camps, Muslims were forced to disown their religion and if any stepped out of line they would be tortured or killed. On the outside, China would claim they were re-education facilities for extremism and terrorism.

D. Problem and Solution: How to Save the Uyghurs

There is no plan in action to help save the Uyghurs, but there are plans being made. One common plan is to threaten china's economy. In 2019 there were 210 billion US dollars from Xinjiang alone. And almost all of the products made there are from the camps with forced labor. China is a poor country, and 68% of China's GDP is from Xinjiang. The US government needs to make it illegal to buy products from Xinjiang to stop forced labor and Uyghur imprisonment.
