The new frontier was space. The Soviet Union was ahead of its time. Before Kennedy's presidency the Soviet Union launched SPUTNIK, the first satellite to be put into orbit. The United States wanted to reach farther so they created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). When Kennedy took office the United States fell farther behind, the Soviet Union had already put a dog in space and YURI GAGARIN, Soviet cosmonaut, became the first person to orbit the earth. Kennedy then challenge NASA to put a man on the moon. Along the way ALAN SHEPHERD became the first American to go space, and JOHN GLENN became the first American to orbit the earth. Then three years after Kennedy was gone, Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the moon in 1969.
