The evidence says that the ship wasn't damaged apart from a ripped sail, no-one was on the ship, the crew's belongings were there and 1 lifeboat was missing. Theory 2 is the most persuasive because that's the situation that will most likely have happened. It explains how the sails were ripped, how the crew might have fallen off the ship and the lifeboat that disappeared or have been taken by the inhabitants of the ship.

Mistaking it for an island, the crew disembarked to explore it. However, the temporary island receded and the crew did not get back onto the ship fast enough and so  drowned. This would make sense because the ship was undamaged and the crew was no where to be found because the island disapperwd
