It has been shown as an effective treatment for many people with phobias, especially extreme cases. Hypnotherapy works by finding the cause of the phobia and eliminating the event that triggers the phobia. To access the cause of the phobia the person will go under an extreme relaxation state. Techniques are used by the hypnotherapist to help the person become relaxed and focused, also known as a hypnotic trance. In this state the person becomes open-minded as the hypnotherapist talks to the person back to the place and time where the event occurred. Making them aware of the event which will enable the person to understand it and become aware it’s no longer threatening. The phobia will generally disappear once the event has been integrated and reframed.

Talking with a mental health professional can help manage and possibly cure phobias a person is suffering from. Exposure therapy is an effective treatment many therapists use. Exposure therapy focuses on changing the response to the object or situation that triggers the phobia that the person is experiencing. It works by gradually giving the person confidence to confront the phobia head on by taking a step by step process. Also the techniques and relaxation methods used by therapists in the session are taught to the patient so they can do it in their daily lives. Helping them to enhance their mental and emotional wellbeing.
