As part of our "Our Kids at COP31" eTwinning project, we integrated the "Green Homeland – My School: A Solution for the Future" approach with activities for EU Code Week.

Through the medium of coding, we explored the energy of the sun, the vital importance of water, the contributions of rain to nature, and the value of trees for our future.

Our young environmental ambassadors engaged with a coding course featuring project logos and nature-themed symbols; as they honed their skills in algorithmic thinking, navigation, problem-solving, and sequencing, they also bridged the gap between environmental awareness and technology.

As part of our eTwinning project “COP31 is Our Kids”, we will organise an unplugged coding activity for preschool children aged 4–6, combining computational thinking with environmental awareness.

Since we do not use a physical robot, one child will act as the Bee-Bot. Using a floor grid, environmental picture cards and directional command cards, children will plan a route and guide their human robot towards different environmental targets, such as saving water, recycling, protecting trees and animals, and using clean energy.

Children will practise sequencing, giving and following instructions, problem-solving, teamwork and debugging by testing their routes and correcting mistakes together. The activity will help them understand that coding can be experienced without electronic devices and that small actions can make a big difference for our planet.

Objectives:

To introduce basic coding concepts and algorithms.

To develop computational thinking and problem-solving skills.

To promote cooperation, communication and creativity.

To raise awareness of climate change and sustainable living.

To encourage children to take simple actions to protect the environment.

Starting from real-life situations related to environmental protection addressed in the project, the children took part in a coding game in which they matched environmental messages with the corresponding pictures and created routes for the Bee-Bot robot. Throughout the activity, they predicted the robot’s movements, sequenced the commands, tested the routes, and made the necessary adjustments to reach the intended destination.

To highlight local identity, I adapted the game by transforming the Bee-Bot robot into a steam locomotive, a symbol closely associated with the city of Reșița. The activity was then transferred to a handmade map of the city, on which the children guided the locomotive towards different locations and pictures related to environmental protection. In this way, coding became an imaginary journey through the city, with each route offering an opportunity to share a message about caring for nature and the local community.

The activity contributed to the development of logical and computational thinking, the ability to sequence and anticipate commands, spatial orientation, and problem-solving skills. Through teamwork, the children practised communication, decision-making, and expressing their ideas. Integrating environmental messages with the city map also encouraged environmental responsibility and helped the children connect with the values of their local community.
