This formative assessment can be used for ELA or Social Studies. It also works best for students 3rd-5th. Students will play the role of a historical figure they are learning about and write a postcard to another figure talking about a historical event those figures are involved in. An example is President Abraham Lincoln writing to Ulysses S. Grant about the end of the Civil War.

Word Clouds

This formative assessment can be used for any subject. Students will use a free program called "word cloud generator" to create a word cloud based on the lesson taught that day. Students can use any key words or vocabulary words to create it. This is a great way to see what students remembered and took away from the lesson. If you see things that don't align with what you taught, you can see what to reteach.

Doodle Notes

This formative assessment is great for lower elementary grades (K- 2nd). As well great for any subject. Students will doodle or draw a picture of what they learned from the lesson. Drawing can be simple for younger grades or have great details for upper grades. This is a great way for students to express their understanding, especially if they have trouble with writing. Reviewing these as well, teachers can see if anything that needed to be remembered was missed.

Four Corners

This formative assessment best used for math, however adaptable for any subject. Works with grades 1st-5th, just changes of detail in questions. Each corner of the room will have an established answer that students can move to. Students will given a question and they will move to whatever corner they believe that answer can be. There can be an open discussion for students to discuss why they chose the corner they did. This is a great way to see if students are solving math problems correctly and student who went to the incorrect corner can explain their thinking in a discussion.

This formative assessment is great for upper-grade levels (3rd-5th). Students who already enjoy watching videos will watch a short overall video of an event or topic of the lesson. While students are watching it, questions will appear throughout certain parts of the video to keep them engaged. These questions can be asked to compare to other events, questions of what was shown, or open-ended discussions. Information on student's answers is fully accessible for review.

Rose, Thorn, or Bud.

This formative assessment is great for students of all grades. Students will be asked to write or share what they liked and understood about the lesson/topic (rose), say something they didn't understand (thorn), and something you would like to learn more about or need work on (bud). Older grades (3rd-5th) can follow the in depth prompt shown above. Younger grades (K-2nd) can say a few sentences. This way you can see what students might need work on, using that information see if anything needs to be retaught.

Traffic Light

This formative assessment is great for all grades and all subjects. This is a simple assessment that can be used as a ticket out the door. Printing individual blank images or having students pick out blank green, yellow, or red stick notes. Students either way will write on the prompt/stinky note how they are feeling based on the color of their traffic light. Green is completely understanding, where students can write about something they liked learning about, yellow when students somewhat understand where students can write what they need to work on, and finally red which means they completely don't understand and write that down. This is great information so teachers can see what needs refocus or what needs to be retaught.

Jigsaw Learning

This formative assessment is great for all grade levels, just different ranges of details, as well different subjects. Students will be broken up into different groups where they will focus and learn different topics and becomes experts on it. Then the students will teach other students what they learned to each other group to finally teach the overall lesson.

Thumbs up, Down, or in the Middle

This formative assessment is one of the quickest and easiest for all grade levels and subjects. Students at the end of the lesson will be asked to give a thumbs up if they got it completely, thumbs somewhere in the middle if they somewhat understand, and thumbs down if they completely don't know what you taught. This helps keep track on the room so you'll know if your students are all on the same page. Keeping an eye out for students in the middle or down for small group.

Two Truths, One Lie

This is a formative assessment that feels more like a game that can work for any subject and grade level. Students will as a group determine which one is a lie and explain why it is the lie and what makes it incorrect. If done in divided groups of students, a point system can be developed when different groups if they can accurately identify the lie and explain why. If students cannot determine which one is the lie, teachers can use that as the way to review or reteach that topic in the lesson.
