Importance of vocabulary and tools

Awabe is friendly, not very attractive but is like a contextualized online dictionary and beginners, especially adults like this kind of apps. My students who are teacher trainees will use it like that when they are asked to practise for their speaking exams and need to use functions and idioms. I would use this tool for online learning so my students can create their dialogues for later acting out.

Beeling exploits the possibility of having the reading passage as a model not only of accurate written language but also for spoken language. Besides, it is very good for differentiated instruction since students can have access to the written text and follow it in the audio. The fact that besides audiobooks , it also uses songs makes it even better for those students who besides being auditory are also into music. And that´s how I would use it, for differentiation. I would use this in both modalities: in- person and online since it will work fine in both. Individuals have different paces and different reasons for Reading, some times I would make use of the exercises after the Reading texts and others I would allow learners to read and show their understanding by creating a poster or a song or something like that.

Duolingo, allows you to meet different purposes of why you are learning the language ( as survival English or to get a Certificate of your language proficiency), for my adult learners it is perfect. The way it combines gamification, mini lessons and a time- progress management system makes it really good for learners of all kinds. I think this is more appropriate to work online and at your own pace.

Eduling: For listening practice, I think it is good the way it reinforces listening skills and provides you with the script which also allows learners to use their Reading skills. Regarding speaking, I like the fact that it caters for interactive practice whether individual or pair work and that it has different access for different purposes. I find it really appropriate for my students who prepare for international exams since Listening is usually their main concern and for Speaking they usually feel they never have enough practice. I would use it for both Online or face to face since it is fun and easy to use and it also help them consolidate skills when they are offline.

Learn English: Good app for Listening and Speaking and the fact that it has comprehension questions provide learners with feedback that really helps their progress. Another feature that helps is to count on audioscripts and since the videos are TED talks, this app is really good for my B2First Candidates since they are adults and this app allows them to familiarize with adult topics. I´ll use it for online work since my Candidates are teachers who work the whole day and receive instruction and consolidation in the online mode.

Talk English is my third app. I find it very complete with a wide variety of lessons for developing listening and speaking skills aligned with the levels of proficiency from the Common European Framework. This makes it really useful for me since these are the levels of the courses we teach. I will use it in both modalities for my students.

I like both tools. However I think Toontastic is more appropriate for children although I had lots of fun when I created my video.

Read Aloud combines several features that i think are important when you want to develop spoken skills. First, listen to a model, then shadowing reading which allows students not only to recognize and produce specific sounds but mostly to produce the appropriate intonation and rhythm. That´s how I have been using it in my B2first course preparation. The additional possibility for learners to record their own voices is good but what is best is to receive specific feedback on students´production so they know what needs to be improved.

I think I´ll use it in an online class mostly but not exclusively since students need to understand certain features of spoken English to make the most out of this app and then by working on their own they can have as much practice as they want.
