The production team, costume (etc) are included therefore a large amount of people are credited overall. 

·   When the actors are credited a handful of the best known ones are shown (e.g. Brad Pitt in Fight Club) however not every single person who acts within the film are credited in the opening. If this was done there wouldn’t be a need for the credits at the end and the audience will be bored before it has even begun. This also allows the graphic designer and editor to take more time in making the opening credits interesting and captivating and have the end credits quite simplistic (if that is what they feel would be best).

·   The title of Fight Club is halfway through the credits but the Machinist has it at the end.

·  I think that the credits are in the order that they are because it is the thought process of the audience. They first process who they see so the actors have to go first, then travelling through the different elements of mise-en-scene (costume, sound, props, location, and make-up). The audience will then realise that there is a lot of contribution to the film so they would remember that there are editors, production teams, stunt coordinators etc. 


Similarities


  • The background gives hints to what the film will be about: The Machinist = rolling up a body and the actor is shown clearly. Fight club = nerves in the body shown from the inside and travelling through skin and sweat travelling down the gun barrel to the victims face. 

  • Credits are shown in short spurts so we only get a glimpse into who was involved with the production of the film. The credits are edited to be on screen for around 2 seconds each.

  • The title is shown for longer so that the name of it sticks in the audiences head. If it was as quick as the other credits we may feel as if it is insignificant. 

  • The distribution and production company logos are the first thing shown. This begins the foundation to the film because without this major role it wouldn’t be possible to make the film.

  • The actors with main roles are shown first – I believe this is done so that the audience begin to create an expectation for the film before it starts. 

Overall the similarities are that the credits come on quite slowly through fade but they aren’t on screen for very long so we just get a glimpse of who was involved with production and stuff. Also the logos come on at the beginning as a kind of introduction before the credits start.

It is displaying the company that own it so it is emphasising that it is owned by a large company and therefore this could imply that it could be a well-established film so there might be a high expectation from it. And then we see that it goes into the Regency logo who are the film producers/ production company so that is also telling us who owns it. It then goes into the worded credits rather than logos. First of all we get to see that more evidence of Fox and Regency being heavily involved. And then we can see that it says a Linson films production so this tells us that it is the company that co-produced it. We can see that it says it is a David Fincher film so he was the one who kind of created the whole thing but later on we see that it was inspired by the novel so David Fincher has elaborated on it I suppose and made it a visual representation rather than as a book. And the first actor’s name that we see is Brad Pitt and that instantly tells us that the film may have a higher expectation of it being good because they have employed an A-list celebrity to play the main role. We assume it is the main role because it is the first one that comes up. So if it was someone less well known then the audience wouldn’t see that and expect that the film would be bad. We then see Edward Norton’s name and we also assume that he is a main character cus he is one of the first names shown. Personally I don’t see him as a well-known actor like Brad Pitt but others may know him better from other things. Other films he has been in include ‘The Incredible Hulk’ and ‘Birdman’ which more people may know. Then we have Helena Bonham Carter who is also a better known celebrity. And then we get the Fight Club title so initially we may expect the name of the film to be the first thing that comes up in the credits or the last thing shown but here it is right in the middle so it has built up to it then we will have the other minor credits (as some may feel). The first names that appear may seem more important and the rest not so much. We then get Meatloaf and Jared Leto so they are other minor characters and then there is a list of three names so this might be even smaller roles within the film because they are all grouped together rather than being separate like the others. It then says casting by Larey Mayfield so we get to know who chose the actors to fit the different characters. Then we get costume designer, special effects makeup supervisor, sound designer and music so we get different elements of the film that is important to make the film, both visually and auditory. We see a lot of detail and influences for who made the film happen. We then get editor, production designer, director of photography and executive producer. We see more roles that are important, as all of them are, so it seems as though the roles that are vital are shown now after the others which some may consider to be menial. We need to include that to get to know the main people involved with the creation and not just those who played main roles or anything. Then it says it was based on the novel and it is a screenplay so we can get the impression that the film wasn’t the first idea, it has been displayed as a book beforehand and now it has been adapted into a visual piece of media. And that is where the credit almost ends and it goes back in to linking everything together for the imagery of coming back through the nervous system, out of the skin, through the sweat and down the barrel of the gun where along the way we see who produced the film and that David Fincher directed it. ]]> 2017-01-12 19:21:13 UTC https://padlet.com/sophie_dewberrysop/5j6tx05vkcro/wish/146900116 Podcast Transcript - The Machinist sophie_dewberrysop https://padlet.com/sophie_dewberrysop/5j6tx05vkcro/wish/146900428 The first credit that we get to see is the distribution company Filmax Entertainment so they were responsible of delivering the film to cinemas and spreading awareness and giving advertisement. Then we get to see that it is being presented by Filmax Entertainment and there is a bit of a gap between that before seeing that it is a Julio Fernandez production and the production company are owned by Julio Fernandez.  This therefore means that he leads Filmax Entertainment Company and directs things. And then we go into the visual sequence. The similarity between this one and Fight Club is the space in between showing actors name and producers and things is quite short. There is about two seconds in between before there being a dissolve or a fade before going on to the next one. So in the Machinist the first credit we see is the protagonist’s actor Christian Bale and although we don’t know a lot about the film at the moment we assume he is the main character and possibly he is the one in the background. Obviously we know him from playing Batman so we assume that like with having Brad Pitt in Fight Club, we see that it could be a high expectation film as they have a well-known and well regarded celebrity who has won awards and got a positive name for themselves through film. Additionally both of the first names shown regarding cast is the main character and this is another similarity between the two openings. We then see Jennifer Jason Leigh’s name so we think this may be another main character – possibly the main female lead. This also lasts two seconds which most of the credits do. The next credit we get is Aitana Sanchez Gijon and we assume that they would be a character who is vital to the film. At the 27 second mark we see John Sharian and then that fades out and we see the person who wrote the story. So unlike fight club where it was inspired by a novel this one is written purely as a film/ screenplay rather than being adapted from a play or a novel. And it was written by Scott Kosar which sounds like a familiar name – yeah so he is best known for ‘Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ so we may also have an expectation from that depending on how you felt about that film. Then we see the next credit for Brad Anderson who directed it so like in ‘Fight Club’ we get to see who directed and the distribution company which is all quite important with the credits because if we didn’t have those job roles the film wouldn’t be around.
