With all this new technology coming out we had cars, and radios. We could get news and sports updates from home with these radios. The automobiles allowed for people to get to further places. Automobiles also were the reason that the courtship era was over because now teenagers were dating. Also, the Jazz culture came to life during the 20's.

A consumer culture is when social status, values, and activities are centered around the consumption of goods and services. Credit played a big role in this culture because it made it easier for people to purchase things even if they couldn't afford it. During the 1920’s many appliances were invented and purchased such as: televisions, radios, refrigerators and washing machines. Many fads were popular during this time. A fad is something that is popular and in trend. Some fads that were popular during the 1920’s were crossword puzzles, flagpole sitting and dance marathons. Some dances that were popular in the 1920’s included the tango, waltz, and the jitterbug.

The roaring 20's was a direct cause of the Great Depression in more ways then one. During this time people experienced having wealth and access to new technology to spend this money on. Everyone was so swept up in how great the economy was during this time that no one tried to save money or prepare for anything bad to happen. The new credit and installment plans allowed people to buy expensive things such as cars for cheap and then make payments on it over time. While today this is a commonly used thing back then interest rates were extremely high and all the issues with this had not been worked out. Consumerism along with all the new innovations was a direct cause of the Great Depression. People never thought about what could happen instead we were constantly making new goods and buying them with all the wealth we had.

Credit was formed during the 20's which was a huge effect on the Great Depression. It was one of the leading causes because people were able to purchase without paying right away. Another leading cause was Installment plans. Installment plans allowed people to buy goods over an extended period of time without having to put down a lot of money at the time of purchase. This helped people purchase things like appliances, automobiles, and even homes. Another leading cause of was Consumerism. Consumerism is a social and economic order that encourages the purchasing of goods and services in large increasing amounts. Credit caused for a lot of debt for people and America in general. People could buy now and pay later with installment plans. For example, automobiles start off pay was $5 and than later with the payment/installment plans they would be spending even more. During the roaring 20’s a lot of people were focused on entertainment so they could relax, have fun and just not be stressed out because of everything that happened with the war, people basically were trying to focus on something else. This is where consumerism came into play. Consumerism is the protection or promotion of the interests of consumers. Basically with people just buying things for the heck of it was not just putting themselves in debt but the country too… and then came the Great Depression
