Against all odds the Americans have won the war against Britain. Now is the next step, establishing a peace treaty. The Treaty of Paris of 1783 is the official and formal ending of the bloody Revolutionary War. In the document it states that the United states is now completely independent, their boundaries are the Mississippi River to the West, Canada to the North, and Spanish Florida to the South, each side would repay their debts to each other, the British would return any enslaved persons they had captured, and that the states were recommended to return any loyalist property. However Americans never repaid any prewar debts to Britain and never returned loyalist property. Britain didn't return runaway slaves and refused to give up military outposts in the Great Lakes area. The signing of the Treaty of Paris of 1783 was in the midst of being painted by Benjamin West, when the British delegates refused to be painted. The painting was never finished and therefore only features the American delegates.

I don't understand how the Patriots dare to celebrate their victory. They think of themselves so highly yet do not have any mercy for those with different beliefs and opinions. It should say in the treaty that the states are required- not just recommended- to give loyalists their stolen property back. If they value natural given rights so much they should do so. What hypocrites! I believe this treaty has caused more problems than solutions. As a loyalist stated, “...some have to lament over the wreck of their departed wealth and estates.”

The Treaty is Just What Everyone Needs!

After all the devastating events in the war the Treaty of Paris is exactly what America and even Britain needs. We have the land we deserve and need to expand our country further. We have agreed to leave Britain alone if they do the same for us which should be more than enough for them. Britain and their followers (including loyalists from America) have no right to be selfish. No more damage and no more arguing. What is stated in the treaty is what this country needs to thrive and flourish. This treaty is necessary because, as a founding father said, “Thirteen wheels require a steady and powerful regulator to keep them in good order…” Now our rights cannot be broken anymore.
