His system includes 5 Layers which include Mircosystem, Mesosystem, Exosystem, Macrosystem and Chronosystem.

Mircosystem: Includes family and friends, affecting child directly. 
  • If a child has problems at home, this kid is more likely to hangout around peers who are bad influences and also create problems making it more difficult for the individual to succeed in the future. 

Mesosystem: The connections of the people surrounding the child. This can include Teachers.
  • If a parent were to not like the teacher of their kid, it would affect the kind causing them stress.

Exosystem: Don't affect the child directly, for example a teacher with the principal. 
  • If the teacher has been having problems with her boss the principal, this may cause he to be stressed and feel pressured which can lead up to her taking it out onto her students.

Marcosystem: Culture, Religion and Social Norms. 
  • Even if a child were to move into a better geographical area, this doesn't guarantee that they will have a sense of belonging. 

Chronosystem: Time.
  • People change and people heal but experiences vary and this can be traumatic for kids as they grow up. Such as a divorce where kids will someday heal from, but certain relationships can push them back onto the trauma they had when they were younger.

A kids life isnt determined by their genetics.

Genes are under the influence of the Environment! Meaning that their potential depends on the environment that they grow up in.

  • Many say that Bronfenbrenner focused too much on the cognitive and biological areas and not enough onto the socioemotional. 

    • Socioemotional meaning how one replies to others showing/ expressing emotions and creates relationships with people in their life such as parents, friends, peers etc. 

    • Others state that this theory can be difficult to be able to practice it. There are no detailed mechanisms for development and no balance with the different groups/ layers of the theory. Meaning not all the layers have the same amount of influence onto the child.

  • Mesosystem: Whenever I go to my best friends house, I always learn more about her culture because despite us both being Mexican, her mom makes different types of foods and they have a different family dynamic and I learn about how they live life. This creates a positive environment in which I feel included.
  • Chronosystem: Something that I have observed overtime is the kids who bully other kids oftentimes are a victim of being terrified in their home. They take out their emotions onto those who seem weak because that is what happens to them where they live.
