In the lesson,the bishops candlesticks,the convict was a normal person in the past .as the food was scarce at the time,he was forced to steal food for his wife who was ill.he was later arrested for the petty crime and was treated less than a human and fed on filth that turned him into a criminal.If the intention of the person who has commited a sinful act is good ,but is judged and punished by the people around him,his mindset changes.
