I’m in red and we got married in January!!
I graduated from KCC in 2015 with my AA in Liberal Arts and Hawaiian Studies. Graduated from UH Mānoa in 2018 with my BA in Hawaiian Studies. Since graduating, I was working at Chaminade University as a Program Coordinator, but we moved to upstate New York in October 2021 and I am working on my masters at NYU for project management. I’m sent to graduate in December of 2023. It is because of LaVache and the staff at KCC that I found a passion for working in higher education and hope to continue working on college campuses in the future.

Being given a chance to attend college was a real game-changer for me. The people I met through Lunalilo and KCC made a big difference in my life and are now my forever family. I look at this picture sometimes, and it blows my mind to think that I got a bachelor's and master's degree and am now on my way to getting a Ph.D. 10 years later. Big mahalo to everyone that makes this program possible!

My cohort and I became like a second family. The people in this program are always friendly and dependable. I still contact them regularly. This program really supported me financially as I transitioned from high school into college. When I graduated from high school I was fearful about how I would be able to go to college. I had no experience catching the bus, I had minimum wage jobs, and my parents were unemployed. However, this program really changed my life and opened my eyes to many opportunities. This program helped me to network, teaches life lesson, creates a safe environment, and helped me graduate from Kapiʻolani Community College debt free. I am forever grateful!

Alohaaa, my name is Sila Taufa. I'm currently majoring in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Business and plan to transfer to UH Manoa next semester. I am now in my second year at KCC and an IS peer mentor for Lunalilo. I'm still figuring out what I want to do specifically but being at KCC and in the Lunalilo Scholarship Program has allowed me the time to do that. This program has given me, and my family, the opportunity to do everything our loved ones worked so hard for and pursue our goals. For that, and many other reasons, I could not be more grateful. Thank you for giving me the chance to further my education and also helping to navigate through this journey.

Hiii! My name is Taliyah, right now I am in my second year of college at KCC. Honestly if someone told me a few years ago that I’d be living in Hawaii, let alone be in college I wouldn't have believed them. I am so grateful to be a part of this community and scholarship. I decided to continue being apart of Lunalilo Scholars Program as a Peer Mentor. This year has definitely been difficult in many ways, but I continue to keep my hope. I have a church community, where I spend a lot of my time. Also I am currently working as a PPT at Kalihi Kai Elementary, where I get to spend hands-on time with special needs students. When I am not at work, church, or doing things for school I like to walk on the beach, hang out with friends, and go sailing/hiking with my dad. During the pandemic I was able to have a great first year college experience because of the community Lunalilo provided. I look forward to making more enjoyable experiences with everyone! Thank you <3

Aloha,

My name is Asia Paulino and I was in cohort #2. First, I give God the praise and the glory for blessing me ten years ago with receiving the Lunalilo Scholarship program. Second, I would like to humbly and whole heartily thank Mr. & Mrs. Kaneta for their generosity and kindness. To tell you where I am today, I first have to tell you where I started. Two months after graduating high school, I was blessed to receive this scholarship. Without this scholarship, I would have not been able to attend college because at the time my parents and I could not afford it. I am the first individual in my family to attend and graduate from college debt free. Receiving this scholarship created the fundamental building blocks I needed in order to be where I am today. I first graduated KCC with my Liberal Arts degree before transitioning to UH Manoa. I graduated UH Manoa in December 2018 with distinction Magna um laude earning a BA degree in Political Science. Today, I work for the Department of Defense (DOD) as a Program Analyst. Thank you for seeing the worth and value in a young 17 year old girl who didn’t recognize it in herself at the time. I remember being 17 years old not knowing who I wanted to be or what I wanted to do with my life. I’ve been through trials and tribulations coming a long way learning how to become the young mature intelligent woman I am today. Being awarded this scholarship changed my life providing and leading me to opportunities I never thought I would receive. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Asia Paulino

The Lunalilo Scholars Program has greatly impacted me because they have given me the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be back in school again. I had dropped out of college twice, having a negative and lazy mindset that I couldn’t succeed and do the work and that college was not for me. I thought I would never return, and that was the end of it. Still, when the Covid-19 pandemic occurred, I got furloughed from my job working in the hotel industry in Waikiki. My future was uncertain, and I didn’t know if I would have a job to come back to. I realized that I had no backup plan and no skills to fall back on, so I knew from that moment on that I had to go back to school because my livelihood and future were in jeopardy. I’m so grateful that I got accepted into this program because my education was completely paid for during a time of uncertainty when I didn't know how I would pay for school while being furloughed. I’m so grateful that the Lunalilo Scholars Program helped me navigate my way through college and has given me the necessary tools and resources to succeed in and out of school. Mahalo, Mr. and Mrs. Kaneta, LaVaché Scanlan, and all of the donors and contributors who have helped make this program what it is today. Thank you for being a much-needed blessing to myself and my two younger siblings who were also in this program; because of your support and generosity, you are helping us fulfill our dreams. Thank you for being a part of my life journey. I will never forget what you have done for my family and me. Thank you and God Bless.

Luckily, I got an email from Sami & Nisa to apply for the free summer bridge for pacific islanders & because of that, I was able to have priority for the Lunalilo scholarship! In addition, I got to meet so many great people like my professors, counselors, peer mentors, and other peers who have also received this scholarship. Right now, I am currently doing a work-study and working as a peer mentor in the First Year Experience Office. I have also gotten the opportunity to be a peer mentor for the Pasifika Summer Bridge Program for this summer! When I look back to the start of my college journey in 2018, I picture myself as an immature and uneducated student. Thankfully, the opportunities that this program provides benefit me to grow and learn as a person and student. After being in college for about four years with no degree, I am grateful for the positive energy that comes from the campus of Kapiolani Community College. Being a part of Lunalilo Scholars has been an eye opening experience for me and it gives me hope that I can create a healthy future for myself. Even if I do not succeed with the long road ahead, I will always be proud to remember where and who I started off my college journey with. Mahalo Lunalilo Scholars Program for all the support.

Aloha Everyone!! My name is Chasity Wily. During my first year at KCC and being able to be a part of the Lunalilo Scholarship Program, I am grateful and honored to have received so much support both financially and educationally. Really, they are like a second family because they are always there to reach out and offer support in any way. I was stressed at first when I seen that I would have student balance for going to school, but thought, it will be ok, I will just work if I have to, to be able to support going to school and home. It was such a blessing when I spoke with LaVache and basically was told that my first year of school would be taken cared of. For some people, that may not be a big deal, but for me, it was definitely a huge weight that was immediately lifted from my shoulders. To tie it in to my experience with being part of this awesome amazing program, just from that standpoint alone, I have been able to focus on my schooling and not too much on finances, so that I can achieve and accomplish my goals that I have set out to do. Ultimately I am aimed at getting my BSN at UH Manoa, but not until after I am able to get accepted and earn my ADN here at KCC. I must add in that our peer mentors are great as well, for me, I have Taliyah, and honestly, she genuinely cares about you. She is diligent in doing her weekly check ins and always adds that if there is anything that she can help with, she is always there. All in all, this Lunalilo Program is awesome and has taught us many things that you would have thought we would have known and even does it's best to give us stepping stones in preparing us for the world we live in today. I am grateful and honored to be a Lunalilo Scholar!!

Hello all, my name is Leo Evangelista and I was a part of the amazing 2018-2019 Seventh Cohort. During my last year at high school, I was very, and I mean very, irresponsible when it came to college stuff. Despite having a resume worthy enough to get into many universities and have a sizeable financial aid package, I ended up not applying anywhere at all due to sheer laziness. I was lost and without direction in my future. As a last-ditch effort, I decided to apply to the Lunalilo Scholars Program at KCC, and of course, I did so at the last minute. And I'm very glad that I did. LaVache, our peer mentors Kapili, Syd, Josiah, (and 1 more, I'm so sorry I forgot your name), other Lunalilo staff members, and my fellow cohort members were all pivotal in helping and supporting me as I mapped out what was my second chance not just at college, but at a career and a future. Without them, and without this program, I honestly can't tell you where I'd be today or what I'd be doing. Because of them and this program, I was given another opportunity to get my life back on track and to try for a better future. I graduated from KCC in 2020, with a Liberal Arts Degree with a concentration in Business. Today, I am a few months away from obtaining my BBA in Marketing and Human Resource Management at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. I am also a potential candidate for the Master of Human Resource Management program at Shidler, so my fingers are crossed for that. Either way, I plan on pursuing a career in the HR field, and we'll go from there. But none of this would have been possible without the Lunalilo Scholars program, the wonderful people running it, and of course, the very generous Kaneta family. I will forever appreciate everything they have taught and given me and I hope all the best for the future of this program, which no doubt shall continue to flourish. Happy 10 year anniversary and I look forward to seeing this program change even more lives for the better! CHEEEEEEEEHOOOOOOOOOOOOOooo

Hi,

My name is Jasmine Hill - Oasay and I can’t begin to express what this scholarship means to me, it has changed the entire trajectory of not only my life, but the lives of my family as well. I am pursuing an associates degree in nursing, although this path is very common I have a few uncommon obligations on my plate that make it hard to commit fully to pursuing a degree. Lunalilo gave me the confidence, support and finances to make what I thought was just a dream into an actual reality. Growing up and currently residing in the public housing, can cause you to feel inadequate but with every class I took, every test I passed I gained back a strong sense of self, in the moments where I felt weak it was this community that embraced me and challenged me to keep going. You have rebirth a persistency in me that I did not know I had, I am a better student, leader and over all person because of the Lunalilo scholarship program. To the founders, professors, peer mentors and fellow scholars I say thank you, for inspiring me to achieve the best that life has to offer! I am forever indebted to you, May you continue to be blessed as you have been an undeserved blessing in my life.

LaVache, Rob, and Aunty CoCo have seen me through the ups and downs of life, both academically and personally. Pictured above are me and my best friends, who I consider family at this point; we all come from four different cohorts of Lunalilo! There is a quote by Shyanne Hummel from the first cohort (that's even listed at the top of this padlet), that Lunalilo is "a recycling of hope, love, and faith," and I feel like that perfectly describes the effect that the program has had on my life. I will be forever grateful for all of the opportunities and blessings that being a Lunalilo Scholar has given me.

Hi my names Julia this is my first here at KCC. I started off majoring in a degree focused in art but I've decided to switch over a psychology degree. I want to become a counselor of some sort and maybe even one day a psychologist. I'm an addict in recovery with over a year clean. This year has been difficult because of personal issues with my family still struggling with active addiction and other things, but I'm so grateful for the opportunity to pursue a better life aided by the Lunalilo Scholars program! I know I'm capable I just need to get re-entered into myself and my goals rather than outside issues. Even if it's hard I know I'm worth it so I'm going to keep trying.

Today I am in my final year in getting my A.S. in both culinary and pastry arts. Thank you so much Lunalilo for everything you have done for me, with out your help I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Aloha Lunalilo Scholars! Wow! This program is such an amazing opportunity to take advantage of as you journey to continue your education. I want to say a HUGE MAHALO to both Mr. And Mrs. Kaneta for this opportunity that I was able to be apart of during my time at KCC. Thank you to the amazing staff you both had backing you in this program from Summer to the end of school year from Aunty Lavache, Aunty Coco, all the previous scholars before me who mentored us, and peer mentors and staff of KCC. You've all made the experience an awesome one and helped us all learn more about ourselves and our roots. Because of this program, I was able to finish my Associates Degree at KCC and it opened me up to become a Student Editor in my last year at KCC as well. Such an awesome experience! It's also helped me in my life as I went on to work at a private school and in thr past recent years as a Health Aide in the State of Hawai'i D.O.E. I know my journey is not over and would still like to continue in my education. Once again, Thank you Kaneta 'Ohana, Aunty Lavache, Aunty Coco, peer mentors for this God given opportunity. I truly encourage future students to take part in this opportunity if you hear about it! Remember each opportunity we take only elevates us to become better people in life, in our career fields, in our homes, just in general. Mahalo Nui!

Without this program I wouldn't be as successful in my classes, as it really guided me in the right direction. Thank you so much to the staff for being really supportive and encouraging. If I haven't heard about this scholarship I don't even know if I would still be in school. Again, I am beyond grateful for Lunalilo Scholars program as it gave me the support, skills, and confidence I needed.

OMG! There are not enough words to express the kind gesture the Lunalilo Scholarship program and the Kaneta ‘Ohana influenced me to pursue my degree in the medical field. During my studies at Kapiʻolani Community College I was introduce to Lāʻau Lapaʻau (Hawaiian Medications) with Kumu Kahale Cruz while in the Hawaiian Studies department. I took this course to better my education in the medical field. Little did I know I was amazed with all the natural plants that surrounded us, in which these plants could heal your body and it was all natural! From here on out, I focused my education to Hawaiian culture. Connecting myself with lots of ‘ike (knowledge) from many peers, nā kumu and nā hoa. I engaged with my ancestry, my routes and connected myself to the ‘aina and kai. Although I did not complete me degree in the medical felid. I was very fortunate to complete and received my Bachelor Arts degree in Hawaiian and Ethic Studies. With all the ‘ike I have gain, I have a stronger understanding with my culture and able to pass down my ‘ike to my ‘ohana and others. MAHALO NUI LOA!!!

Aloha e Kākou, currently I am debating if I should go back to school to pursue my Master’s degree in Hawaiian Studies. Focusing in Lāʻau Lapaʻau and or Hawaiian fabrics arts. Using my ‘ike (knowledge) to kokua and teach others from what I have learned. Other then this, I’m caring / working with adult disability and spending a lot of time with my ‘Ohana especially my niece. I have special care for my niece as she was born two months early and needed special care the first 4-6 months. She is currently 14 months and healthy. Me Ke Aloha, Kina
