The Freshest Kids

Summary: The Freshest kids is a documentary highlighting the main points and the background of breakdancing. Through conversations and "interviews" with old bboys, I was able to gain insight on the history of what changed when breakdancing moved to the streets, where certain moves originated from, and why a lot of break dancers have similar styles of dance, sad what the whole essence of dance is. Batch and Saosa are a Latino group who highlighted the diversity in breakdancing in streets. The last question was answered beautifully in the beginning of the movie, by Afrika Bambaataa, who said it deals with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, but also peace, unit, love, and fun.

What does your subject matter have to do with social dance and/or diaspora dance?

Break dancing is a social dance. People base their moves off previous dancers, they challenge each other in social clubs just for the fun of it and for the opportunity to learn from each other, and they mentioned the fact that bringing break dancing to the streets allowed for it to become more diverse.

Who and what is this DVD about?

This DVD is about the culture and history of break dancing, especially rooted from the ghetto, projects, and urban rural areas between Latinos and African Americans. It discusses the way in which breakdancing acted as a social dance and brought different communities together.

What genres, styles, issues, and ideas are being presented?

The genres being presented were mostly hip hop and rap. The styles of bboying and bgirling, mixed with anything and everything. Every dancer has their own style.

You mentioned that "The Freshest Kids" highlighted "the main points and the background of breakdancing" but you never got to the specifics of the main points or the background. For example, take a look at your response to

"What genres, styles, issues, and ideas are being presented?"

Within the genre of Hip Hop are numerous styles some of whoch were innumerated in the film. Issues such as hip hop becoming commercial, the rise of "gangsta rap", the rise of disco and the decline of hip hop, etc.

Dance is my art. It has always been my art. My mother put me in dance when I was 3 years old, and I've stuck with it thus far. I make my art because it is something I love to do, and I love to see the products and outcome of my art. My art is beautiful. My inspiration to make my art is all the people around ,e who also make similar art to me, and myself. My friends serve as inspiration to be better, and I am my own inspiration to be better tan I was yesterday.

Dancing Dreams

This movie was a great movie to watch after seeing Pina a couple years ago. The movie Pina focuses more on Pina herself, whereas this movie, Dancing Dreams, has Pina teaching German teenagers around our age her dance style and her routines. Her style is too different from the norm to try to place into a certain genre of dance. I think she makes everything so original, that it makes people, meaning myself, begin to forget about the main categories, and give her one of her own. Her pieces require the students to be able to completely step out of their comfort zones. This directly links to the idea of social dance as a whole. She has the students interact with each other as their are dancing, which is a form of social dance in itself. Like mentioned before, the DVD is about Pina Bausch and her students, and about them learning this unique and originalstyle of dance.

Dance is my art. It has always been my art. My mother put me in dance when I was 3 years old, and I've stuck with it thus far. I make my art because it is something I love to do, and I love to see the products and outcome of my art. My art is beautiful. When I make my art, it allows me to minister through dance, express myself through dance, and just have fun. My inspiration to make my art is all the people and things surrounding me on a daily lifestyle I get ideas from the media, my friends, and just thinks I see around me. My friends and competition serve as inspiration and motivation to be better, along with the choreographers I see on youtube, like WIldabeast and Kaelynn Harris. In simplicity, I think my art signifies my love to dance and my personality and uniqueness as a whole. The most unique part about how I make it, is that although I take inspiration from other people, in the end, my flavor is original and to myself and my style. When people say dance is life, I can relate to that. I have been doing it all my life, and cannot imagine life without it. It means a lot to me, and I can do it whenever and wherever I please.
