(1 pt.) My debate topic is the benefits of online banking outweighs the harms.

(2 pts.) People on the affirmative side of this topic say they enjoy the mobile capacity to be able to check their accounts at their convenience and paying bills online (automatic withdrawals help them to make sure they pay bills on time).

(2 pts.) People on the negative side of this topic say impulse spending increases because you’re not using real cash and the risk of identity theft increases because security and passwordscan be more easily hacked than before.

(2 pts.) After considering multiple views regarding both sides of the topic, I am in favor of the affirmative BECAUSE I can check my account regularly and change my password regularly to make sure my account is not hacked and it’s more important to me personally that I have the convenience of accessing my account anytime I want. I work a day job…. During “banking” hours, so I need to pay my bills and balance my account after business hours.

(2 pts.)

Do violent video games contribute to youth violence?

The affirmative side states that kids playing these game can cause more aggression and fighting. In fact, 90% of pediatricians agree that these video games make children more violent. The gun violence and combat that they experience in the game, can cause real life behavior changes. Children are likely to imitate the doings of the people on the games, causing the erratic behavior.

The negative side states that the sales of these video games have gone up while the juvenile arrest rates have gone down 37%. Also, juvenile murder rates have gone down 76% over the past 20 years. Studies claiming that video games influence violence are said to be flawed, and they aren't taking into the consideration the background of some children. They claim that by playing these games it helps to relieve stress and anger.

I choose the affirmative side because even though it is just a game some people can start to confuse, the game with their reality. Also, there are many other ways to relieve stress and anger rather than killing people on a video game. I think doctors are pretty smart and the fact that 90% of pediatricians believe that these games have an impact on children makes it more accurate to me.

http://videogames.procon.org/

People that agree with this also think that technology will do better work than humans.
~People on the negative side of this topic say that if technology were to take over many people will become unemployed which will effect the economy and they say that many people will become lazy.
~I think that technology should assist humans in their jobs because it makes doing a lot of jobs easier, but it should not completely take over because too many people will become unemployed.

http://www.debate.org/opinions/should-technology-replace-human-labor

Living in the Era of Technology.

Pros- Our cars and cell phones have navigation systems to ensure us that we don't get lost. We can pay bills right there on the internet with a touch of a button. We can communicate with anyone, anywhere, at any given time. Not only by telephone, but by video, instant messenger, and email. For family emergencies they can track each other on their phones to make sure they are where they are suppose to be.
Cons- Even though it all sounds great, there are still plenty of downfalls to technology. People have their credit card numbers stolen and businesses have their information hacked or computer systems disabled. Criminals take advantage of technology committing cyber crimes. Dangerous people can get ahold of others numbers and say who they are not.
I think that technology is a great thing and helps make our lives easier. It saves time, helps share information, and is quick. Many people say technology is bad but without it they probably wouldn't be half of where they are at today.
http://inspirationfeed.com/articles/technology-articles/pros-cons-of-living-in-the-era-of-technology/

Is technology good for kids?
Pros: Technology exists everywhere and it's used everyday. Kids who start with technology early on can end up learning more because they experience more with technology and make it interesting so it sticks in their head longer. Cognitive are widely improved because technology helps in faster and better development of cognitive skills. Allows kids to be more interactive in learning.
Cons: Kids could tend to be less sociable, relying on a screen for communication rather than face to face. Technology is also pretty expensive. Want electronics that cost a couple hundred dollars.
I choose the affirmative side on this topic because technology is everywhere. Younger kids tend to catch on and learn faster. It makes it easier for them to navigate the electronic world.
http://healthresearchfunding.org/11-pros-and-cons-of-children-using-technology/

It makes it easier to get a message to many people at one time.

Cons- Decrease in face-to-face communication. People are becoming less active due to the ability to talk to someone on a device or the amount of things to do online.

Is social media good for teens?
Pro:
Social media has allowed teens to socialize over the web when they are unable to in person. They can share memories they are proud of with the world or just a close group of friends. Sometimes you can even earn fame from a social media site. They can also make money off of selling items they own online. Overall, social media is a major convenience for teens allowing them more opportunities.
Con:
Cyberbullying has become a much larger threat to teens now that social media has evolved in many new ways allowing some teens to post anonymously so that no one knows it is them saying hurtful things. Predators could also take advantage of teens posing as someone of interest when in reality they could be a criminal. Others can hack into others accounts and pose as them and say negative things. Overall it is unsafe for teens to use social media if they are unaware of the dangers and damage they can do.
Opinion:
I am on the affirmative side. Social media has many pros and the cons can easily be avoided with smart choices. The cons are basically only possible through user error.
http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2015/01/16/10-reasons-why-social-media-is-great-for-teenagers_n_7317716.html

Are social networking sites good for our society?
Pro:
1. Social networking sites spread information faster than any other media. Over 50% of people learn of breaking news on social media. 65% of media reporters use sites like Facebook for research, and 52% use Twitter.
2. Social networking sites help students do better in school. 59% of students with access to the Internet said that they use social media sites to talk about educational topics. After a middle school in Portland introduced a social media program to engage students, grades went up by 50%.
Con:
1. Social media enables the spread of false information. An example is on September 5, 2012 false rumors of fires, shootouts, and caravans of gunmen in a Mexico City suburb spread on Twitter and Facebook and caused panic, flooded the local police department with over 3,000 phone calls, and temporarily closed schools.
2. Social networking sites lack privacy and exposes users to government and corporate intrusions. 13 million users said they had not set or did not know about Facebook's privacy settings and 28% shared all or nearly all of their posts publicly. The US Justice Department intercepted 1,661 pieces of information from social networking sites and e-mails in 2011.

I am with the pro side because it is faster to find out current events. We are able to know what is going on in the world and it is easier for news reporters to gain information. It is also very beneficial to students. They are able to discuss school related topics with each other and can find out more information on those topics.
http://socialnetworking.procon.org/

They say Google Maps will tell you exactly where you are and you only have to program it ahead of time. Many people think self-driving cars will decrease the amount of car accidents.
Cons:
People that are against them say that they already have multiple problems with Google Maps as it is, so risking your life by letting Google Maps drive you places is extremely dangerous. Many think it won't work or that there will be a technological bug and the car will crash.
Opinion:
I think that self-driving cars are really dangerous and I don't trust technology enough to actually have it drive a car.

My debate topic pertains to technology making humans lazier.
Pros- People on the affirmative side of this topic state that technology has made humans physically lazy and inactive. With the production of new video games and new tv shows, people forget and lose focus on how important physical exercise is. Those who believe technology is making humans lazier also say that soon jobs will be taken by robots, and some jobs already have. Due to people being lazy and obese, the production of robots will increase and improve.
Cons- People on the opposite side of this topic state that technology has actually helped us by creating exercise equipment. Exercising equipment like treadmills, exercise bikes and ellipticals keep people up with physical exercise. Technology also makes activities a lot easier to accomplish.

My opinion- Although I do appreciate what technology has given us, I do believe that it is making people lazier.

Affirmative : Many people are saying yes, technology is making humans lazier. From people using remotes to control everything in the house rather than walking around to change objects, have small robots cleaning our houses, fast food/delivery/frozen meals instead people going out together or cooking. Most people now interact over screens, rather than getting together and actually hanging or talking, they text and snap. Any technology with a light emitting screen impacts sleep, which leads to people becoming more tired during the day, being sluggish and not wanting to do much. People don't have to just walk or bike places because of busses, cabs, trains, subways, cars, ubers, etc.

Negate : Although there are drawbacks to technology, there are major benefits that help people. Devices exist for the should purpose of helping people, and to help those from becoming obesity; like the Fitbit, apple watches, there are plans out there if people need help eating properly. Those who are against this say that people are not interacting, or getting delivery rather making food or getting it themselves. Even the mere fact that we have transportation. However, those help many. More often than not people have jobs to get to that they cant get to if they would have to walk or bike. People like nurses after working a shift a very tired, we don't want them driving around so they can give there body necessary nutrients, that increases the likeliness of an accident. Do I even have to mention all the medical benefits?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I personally believe that technology is truly there to help us. People will make the decision themselves, we can only hope that will use it to benefit them, and become a greater person who looks out for there mind, body, and health. I think the majority of people are using technology to there benifit. There will always be lazy people. I don't think technology is to blame for making anyone "more lazy"
http://www.debate.org/opinions/has-technology-made-humans-more-lazy
http://www.debate.org/opinions/has-technology-made-humans-more-lazy
The affirmative sides states that people who use social media can connect and communicate with old and new friends, as well of family members. People can also put themselves out there, showing people their accomplishments within their lifetime.
   The negative sides states that using social media can make people become depressed and/or become more self conscious by others cyberbullying. Another negative downfall of social media is if people don't make their accounts private, Pedehiles, Murders, and many other types of people  can stalk and get information about a person.
   I am in favor of the affirmative side, because social media can connect and keep myself, along with many others, in contact with people I don't see on a day to day basis.
Do the positives of speed cameras outweigh the negatives?
   The affirmative side states that drivers are more cautious with cameras watching them. Once a driver is aware that a camera is watching them, and they will recieve a fine if the law is not followed, they tend to start following the speed limit. The cameras mess with the drivers brain, as they will begin questioning whether or not cameras are everywhere they drive.  Thus causing the driver to slow down and be aware of their surroundings.
The negative side states that the cameras are more of a hazard than helpful as they are a false justice system. There is no proof that cameras reduce accidents, in fact accidents are caused when drivers become too cautious and slow down way below the speed limit causing a pile up. Most drivers are knowledgeable of the cameras and do not speed in those areas, while in other areas they do not apply the same mindset. The constitution states that a person has a right to confront their accuser, but in this case, the accuser is a camera that is not always accurate with the rating. Leaving the person with a ticket he/she may not have deserved.
I am in favor of the affirmative as traffic cameras allow justice systems to track criminals when they go past, using facial recognition. I would much rather have a cautious driver than someone who is not aware of their surroundings.
http://drivingschool.net/the-pros-and-cons-of-speed-cameras-driver-safety/
Cell phones, harmful or helpful?
Helpful -  Cells phones are helpful in many ways. They're used to communicate with others, we use them to express ourselves by posting updates and sharing our experiences. We also use them to keep track of our daily lives, this includes work, assignments, and planning events.
Harmful - Cell phones do a lot to help but they can also be harmful. It's not only screen time that can be harmful, but cells phones can also cause deaths while driving. Many will argue that it's the persons choice to look at their phones, but what some don't know is that the brain can become addicted to social media and other things such as texting. It is scientifically proven that the brain can become addicted you not only cell phones, but technology in general. Cell phones can also be harmful in conversations. When you communicate though texting words can be misunderstood or changed around. Cell phones not only promote social media but they can also be harmful towards it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In my opinion, I agree with both sides. The negative affects of cell phones are clearly enough to cause one to debate if they are worth having. Although there are negatives, cell phones are one of the many advances we've made in technology, and they are useful in peoples every day lives.

My debate topic is should teens be on social media as much as we are?
The affirmative side states social media can cheer us up just by getting in touch with our friends over texting or certain apps. Social media can actually boost our self- esteem too, it is easy to share or post pictures. By watching YouTube videos or googling a question, we can be educated easily. We can go to social media for advice to almost anything we need.
The negative side states that sometimes all social media does is hurt our self- esteem. Cyber-bulling is a very common thing that destroys people, and all the negativity can never go away on social media. It ruins our ability to think independently, or ruins real- life conversations. Another is online shopping makes a spend too much money.
I agree to both sides. I do almost everything on social media but I also have never had a problem with cyber-bullying or online shopping. I believe I have learned a lot from the internet and I can always get an answer when I need too. Social media is the way I communicate with my friends which is very important to me.

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2015/01/16/10-reasons-why-social-media-is-great-for-teenagers_n_7317716.html
http://www.rd.com/health/wellness/negative-effects-of-social-media/

The affirmative side states that playing violent video games causes more aggression, bullying, and fighting. 60% of middle school boys and 40% of middle school girls who played at least one Mature-rated game hit or beat up someone, compared with 39% of boys and 14% of girls who did not play Mature-rated games. And by pretending to be violent characters in video games, children are more likely to imitate the behaviors of those characters and have difficulty distinguishing reality from fantasy.

The negative side states that nearly all young men play video games, so the fact that some people who commit violent acts also played games should not be surprising, nor does it imply a casual relationship. Also Studies claiming a casual link between video game violence and real life violence are flawed. Many studies failed to control for factors that contribute to children becoming violent, such as family history and mental health, plus most studies do not follow children over long periods of time.

I am in favor of the affirmative side. I feel that violent video games does have some influence on teenagers being more aggressive and more likely to fight. Even though not everyone who plays video games becomes violent, there is a higher possibility that they will be influenced by the violence they see. Studies have shown that the more violent the video games are the higher chance the players may become violent.

http://videogames.procon.org/

The affirmative side states that yes, cell phones are safe. Radiofrequency radiation from cell phones is non-ionizing and is not powerful enough to cause cancer.Cell phone radiation, like radio, TV, and visible light radiation, is non-ionizing and lacks sufficient energy to add or remove electrons from molecules, and therefore it cannot ionize and cause cancer. Cell phone radiation levels are tested and certified to remain within levels deemed safe by the Federal Communications Commission. If cell phones were causing cancer we could expect a significant rise in the rate of brain and other related cancers.

The negative side states that cell phones have more un-healthy traits than what we thought. Cell phones emit radiofrequency (RF) radiation, and RF radiation has been shown to damage DNA and cause cancer in laboratory animals. According to American Academy of Pediatrics President Dr. Robert Block, when cell phones are used by children, "the average RF energy deposition is two times higher in the brain and 10 times higher in the bone marrow of the skull," than for adults. A July 2008 reviewed study shows that children under the age of eight absorb twice the amount of radiation into their brain tissue as adults due to their lower skull thickness.

My opinion- I think on the "healthy" side of the use of cell phones is, that I would agree with the affirmative side. Yes, we use cellphones everyday for everyday things like jobs, but we are also using computers and other technological things that are just as damaging as a cellphone.

Does the internet do more good than harm?
The affirmative side states that the internet is nothing but a playground for heinous and illegal acts to be committed. A person's privacy is greatly wounded when they use the internet. Sites and apps like "Snapchat" or "Instagram" store data and locations for anyone to find. Once a person posts something online, it is nearly impossible to erase it, and the law cannot protect your rights in this area. When a person is online they can choose to be whomever and whatever they want to be. Sometimes it's child predators and sometimes it's just bullies, who start to make nasty remarks to someone. Because of cyberbullying, 4,400 teens and counting take their lives each year, 14% of high school students thought about suicide and 7% actually attempted to. The internet is an unsafe, harmful place.
The opposing side states that the internet is our place for freedom. For people to speak their minds freely. The internet brings users information that they otherwise wouldn't have had without it. There are ways to avoid having your information shared worldwide: simply don't share it, don't fill out anything that you aren't comfortable with a random stranger seeing. With the internet comes independency, and meeting people from around the world with similar interests as you. It gives people a chance to broaden their horizons and express themselves
My Opinion- I agree with the opposing side, there are ways to prevent cyberbullying, like shutting the computer off. I agree that the internet offers freedom to express ourselves freely, and meet new people.
http://debatewise.org/debates/3033-internet-brings-more-harm-than-good/#yes6

On one side it is good for children to have phones so they can contact their parents, but then they get all social media which a lot of bullying happens, and creates a spike in depression. Also children stay up all nigh on their phones and don't do the necessary things they need to. Once something si posted online, there is no way to get rid of it. Ever. So a child may post something, and delete it and if they go in for a job interview or something, and can have that certain post or picture brought back up, so kids should be careful what they post or they should have parental restrictions on young children's posts, and be able to monitor what they are doing.

Pros: Stem cells can be used to treat and some day cure diseases like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, heart diseases, stroke , diabetes, birth Defects, spinal cord injuries, replace or repair damaged organs, reduced risk of transplantation (You could possibly get a copy of your own heart in a heart-transplantation in the future, and stem cells will play a major role in curing cancer.

Cons: Anti choice arguments.

I think stem cell research and use should be a legal medical and scientific practice, because of the potential it holds to eradicate or mitigate the negative effects of many of the diseases and disorders we see today.

Should the government block websites deemed inappropriate?

My debate topic is, should the government block websites deemed inappropriate.

People on the affirmative side of this topic say that children or those easily influenced should be censored from certain content that may contaminate their underdeveloped brains. People who affirm this topic also state that it is important to uphold the laws of a country on and offline, so if something is put on the internet that is illegal, it should be censored.

People on the negative side of this topic say that the internet should be a place that people can express their ideas and opinions freely. It is also expressed that everyone should have the same opportunity to access to those opinions and ideas. There are also those on the negative side that say the government could attempt to be deceitful if they censor the internet.

After considering multiple views regarding both sides of the topic, I believe that there are some instances where the government should be allowed to censor the internet. I also would negate this resolution because people should have access to everyone's opinions, at any time.

http://www.debate.org/opinions/should-the-government-be-able-to-censor-the-internet

http://sks.sirs.com/webapp/leading-issue?type=sub&keyno=013718

Should tablets replace textbooks in schools?Pros- Lighter, and easier to carry around. You can have things for multiple classes on the tablet versus one textbook per each class. Studies show that students can learn 30-80% faster when using tablets. E-textbooks on tablets on average cost 50-60% less the printed textbooks. Students can be more prepared for the growing world of technology. Cons- Hand held tablets have been known for causing health problems. Tablets are more expensive then textbooks. You would have to buy new tablets for the incoming class every year whereas you can use the same textbook for multiple years. Tablets could cause a lot of distractions.

http://tablets-textbooks.procon.org/

Pro- There are many platforms to learn and be able to engage yourself online and may be a more beneficial way of learning. Students can find many ways to learn and there are an unlimited amount of places to find information for your project.

Con- Many don't like books as many students aren't engaged to what they are learning and they don't learn the information for the longterm.

I think more technology is better as there are many more ways of learning online. I although do like a hands on approach to learning things

https://occupytheory.org/list-of-pros-and-cons-of-technology/
