Throughout the entirety of Hamlet, William Shakespeare uses a plethora of motifs that convey his vision of tragedy, depression, love, and countless others. However there are two main motifs that Shakespeare uses that really grab and hold the audience as the play progresses. The first motif is that of dark and light; Shakespeare loves to use this motif to shake things up a bit within the play. The second motif is the motif of corruption, decay and rotting. This motif is not used as much as some others, but it is definitely used throughout the play and is used in furthering Shakespeare’s larger vision.
