He would rise in rank throughout the war due to his military skill. Eventually, taking command of the 15th army group, the entire American force in Italy.

The unit would earn many distinctions for this misssion.

Perhaps the most famous mission was a rescue mission for the 36th Texas division. Along the way, the 442nd liberated 3 towns, taking heavy casualties. Eventually, the unit broke through, saving the 36th division.
