Frederick Douglass was a African American who was a Social Reformer and abolitionist. Through his time period he became a national leader of abolitionists in New York and Massachusetts. He didn’t stop there, he gained acknowledgement about his oratory and his anti-slavery writings Douglass was an escaped slave that deserves to be called an American hero because he fought to end the practice of slavery during the Civil War.

His mother died when he was 7 and he only had specific details about his absent white father. In 1824, the five year old Frederick was moved to a plantation to work as a slave. While still in his young ages, Fredrick and the other slaves with him tried to escape through a boat but were later caught. As he got older, he pulled off the escape plan through three trains, three fairies and one steamboat. He arrived at New York and changed his surname to avoid being caught and that is where he started his life as a famous abolitionist and writer. His first book was written in 1845, which explained his life as a slave.
