The idea of a shared struggle and empowering action that goes through historical periods is a key theme. As Marlene's guests begin to share their life stories, they distinguish themselves through their different upbringings, values and conditions. The shifting narratives display that these women have experienced something common as they have all found ways to thrive in worlds controlled mostly by men. Each woman has not wanted to take on their expected role which shows the thread that binds them which is the opposition to injustice against women. This is the reason Marlene brought together these women because, she can relate to each one.

The women who meet at the dinner are bound together by their struggles against patriarchy and oppression, and Marlene relates to each of them differently.
Women and careers is a constant theme throughout the play shown through each character who not only comes into the agency, but portrayed in every character who comes to the dinner.
Surrealism is another theme shown through the play when the women from different historical times come together for a night of celebration. When the women share their stories, they are shared in a dreamlike quality which also presents that surrealism is a constant theme.
