(chapter 6) For this lesson, the teacher should make several groups of students and assign each group a chapter to read. Each member of the group will individually read their chapter. Before beginning, the teacher will explain that some text is not always easy to understand and that is normal. As students begin to read they will write down ideas that they are having difficulty understanding and also the page numbers. Once each member of the group has finished reading, the group will come together to discuss the ideas they did not understand, the other members of the group are to help bring clarity if they did understand what the reading was trying to say. At the end of the lesson, groups can share with the class some of the problems they had while reading and how they got clarity from their group members.
More About The Book: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17659578-freaking-out

The story, told by Babar the Elephant, teaches people how to do different yoga poses. Babar practices Yoga all around the world! Read this book if you are interested in learning beginner yoga!
Teaching Idea: Yoga is an awesome way to destress and deal with anxiety. This can be an incredibly useful tool for young children to learn so that they can carry it with them as they grow. After reading this book as a class, have students learn the Yoga poses. Then, have them take a picture practicing their Yoga pose somewhere in the community. Have students bring in pictures to share with the class. Also, have students discuss how Yoga made them feel. Did it help them calm down? How did they feel about the breathing? Was it easy or hard? Implement a "destress" time a few times a week, and have students practice these poses.
*Adaptation* (From Chapter 8, Module 10)
When students go out into the community to practice yoga, have them bring a Neighborhood Literacy Log. Have students write down different reading/writing that they observed, who they were with, where the observation took place, and the purpose of the reading/writing they observed. They can grow and grow and grow. If your worries have grown so big that they bother you almost every day, this is the book for you!
Teaching Idea: A lesson using this book would probably be most beneficial using a small group, but can be adapted for bigger classes if needed. Teachers should break down the book into sections and use them as lessons. Each section has text, and a lesson where students are asked to draw a picture relating themselves to the lesson. (Ex: draw something that you worry about, make a list of the people you know who worry, etc..) Each step of the book, takes children through steps of understanding their anxiety from a personal perspective, and also teaches them how to overcome it. By the end of the lesson with the teachers guidance students will learn how to beat their worries. The book is already broken down into sections so it is a very straightforward process. Teachers can also add in group discussions if the students feel comfortable sharing.
More About The Book:
http://www.dawnhuebnerphd.com/worrytoomuch.aspx

Teaser: Learning mindfulness, but having trouble slowing your breathing down?? A mind jar just might help!
Teaching Idea: Show students this video of how to create a mind jar, and have the class make them together. After making the jar, teach students how they can use these jars for mindful breathing when they are anxious. I students take a big deep breathe as the tip the bottle upside down, as they place the bottle down have them exhale until the glitter settles. This will not only help them calm their breathing, but watching the glitter move around inside the jar is a calming way to destress.
