Solitaire by Alice Oseman follows 16-year-old Tori Spring, a depressed and disconnected teenager who feels like nothing really matters. Her routine changes when a mysterious online group called “Solitaire” starts posting strange messages and pulling dangerous pranks at her school. Along the way, she meets Michael Holden, a new student who’s overly positive and refuses to leave her alone. As they work together to uncover who’s behind Solitaire, Tori is forced to face her own struggles with depression and her brother Charlie’s mental health. The book deals with heavy topics like anxiety, loneliness, and finding meaning in a world that feels empty. The ending doesn’t magically fix everything, but it leaves a sense of hope as Tori chooses to keep going and connect with others.

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman follows Frances Janvier, a high-achieving student who seems focused on getting into Cambridge but secretly spends her time making fan art for a sci-fi podcast called Universe City. When she finds out that her quiet neighbor, Aled Last, is the creator of the podcast, they form a close friendship built on creativity and understanding. But when Universe City suddenly goes viral, Aled’s secret is exposed, and their friendship is pushed to its limits. The book explores the pressure to be perfect in school, staying true to yourself, and how online communities can both connect and hurt people. It also deals with mental health, identity, and the value of friendships that don’t have to be romantic to be meaningful.

Meanwhile, Jimmy is struggling with fame, pressure, and severe anxiety, feeling trapped by the expectations of everyone around him. When their lives unexpectedly collide, both are forced to face the truth about themselves and the difference between who people think they are and who they really want to be. Surrounded by people obsessed with dating and romance, Georgia feels left out and confused until she learns about being aromantic and asexual. As she figures out her identity, she realizes that the kind of love she’s been searching for doesn’t have to be romantic. The story highlights how friendship and self-acceptance can be just as meaningful. Through her close friendships and experiences in the university’s LGBTQ+ community, Georgia learns that she doesn’t need a relationship to be happy; loving herself and the people who care about her is enough.

This Winter by Alice Oseman is a novella that takes place on Christmas Day and focuses on the Spring family, mainly siblings Tori and Charlie. Charlie has just come home from the hospital after being treated for anorexia, and the holiday brings out the tension within their family as they try to adjust to his recovery. The story is told through three perspectives: Tori, who’s trying to keep everything together; Charlie, who wants a normal Christmas but keeps clashing with his mom; and Oliver, the youngest sibling who mostly sees the day through innocent excitement. Nick, Charlie’s boyfriend, also plays an important role in supporting him and bringing some warmth to the family dynamic. Overall, the novella shows how messy but meaningful love and family can be, especially during tough times.

Nick and Charlie by Alice Oseman is a novella that follows the couple from Heartstopper as they face a new challenge: Nick is about to leave for university, and Charlie still has another year of school left. As their friends keep asking if they’ll stay together, both try to believe their relationship is strong enough to last. But as the move gets closer, Charlie’s anxiety and fear of losing Nick cause him to shut down and avoid the topic, leading to tension between them. Told from both of their perspectives, the story explores communication, trust, and the fear that comes with growing up and apart. It’s a heartfelt look at how love changes over time and how talking honestly is sometimes the hardest, but most important part of staying connected.

With clear indicators being lack of motivation, inability to care, preference for being alone, insomnia, appetite loss, etc.

In these couple pages of Nick and Charlie we can see how intensely Charlie’s anxiety influences both his behavior and his internal state. He experiences strong physical symptoms of distress; feeling sick, wanting to cry, and recalling his past hospitalization. Emotionally, he fears abandonment and constantly seeks reassurance, yet his anxiety makes him push Nick away, snapping defensively even though he regrets it. He becomes trapped in rumination, imagining worst-case scenarios about their relationship but feeling unable to reach out or communicate openly. Overall, his anxiety creates a painful cycle of fear, avoidance, and insecurity that deeply affects how he interacts with Nick.

In these pages of This Winter we are shown how Charlie, after going to the psychiatric ward, struggles to be accepted by his own family as someone with a mental illness. This conflict becomes especially clear during the argument with his mother on Christmas Day, when he reveals how their inconsistent responses make him feel either ignored or unwanted. His mother avoids acknowledging his anorexia, treating it like something that should be quietly dismissed, yet at other times reacts with frustration and blame, as though his recovery is an inconvenience. Charlie’s outburst exposes his longing for genuine understanding and emotional support, but instead he is met with shame, tension, and a refusal to communicate openly about his experience. This moment highlights how the family’s discomfort around mental health intensifies Charlie’s feelings of isolation and pushes him to seek the compassion he needs outside his home.

In these pages of Loveless we are shown how Georgia struggles with overwhelming social pressure that treats romantic love as a required part of life. Despite her being asexual and aromantic, Georgia feels compelled to perform dating behaviors to feel "normal." This effort leads to significant stress, emotional confusion, and detachment because her true feelings don't match the expected narrative. She keeps trying primarily because she fears being seen as "broken" or excluded by her friends and society.

Throughout Alice Oseman’s work, the visual motif of leaves plays a meaningful role in illustrating romantic connection. In the Heartstopper graphic novels, Oseman frequently places small leaves around the page during moments of affection or emotional closeness between characters. These leaves act as a subtle, recurring symbol of blossoming love and the softness of queer joy.
